A Major Milestone: 1000 Posts

On January 1, 2012, I launched ThePreachersWord with my first post. Today, I’m writing my 1000th post.  It’s been an amazing journey.

As I reflect back over 3 ½ years ago, I was looking for a way to expand my ministry. Time and opportunity had come together in an unexpected and unique way for me to consider blogging as a means to share the Word.

We began with no “followers.” No readers. No archives. And no idea where this would lead. Today, according to WordPress, we have 3,275 “followers.” Continue reading →

Should You Live Together Before Saying “I Do”?

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Philippians 4:8

Philippians 4.8

“Thought and character are one,” wrote the 19th century philosopher James Allen in  his book As a Man Thinketh. He further makes this forever timely observation about our thinking:

“Man is made or unmade by himself. In the armory of thought he forges the weapons by which he destroys himself. He also fashions the tools with which he builds for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength and peace. By the right choice and true application of thought, man ascends to the divine perfection. By the abuse and wrong application of thought he descends below the level of the beast. What Mr. Trump Should Have Said

Last Thursday night I joined 24 million other Americans and watched the Republican Presidential Debate on Fox News. While I did have two or three candidates that I was particularly interested in seeing, I admit I was curious what kind of fireworks Donald Trump would ignite! And it didn’t take long!

In the beginning Trump admitted that he would not commit to unconditional support the GOP nominee. Unless it was him! Then came Megyn Kelly’s question and Trump’s answer that people and pundits are still buzzing about. Continue reading →

Self control

Rage, anger and a lack of civility seems to dominate a segment of our society. Or at least it makes the news!

A Texas mother slapped the mother of a girl on the winning basketball team who beat her daughter’s team.

A Florida baseball coach broke an umpire’s jaw after a disputed call.

A transatlantic flight from Rome to Chicago was recently diverted when a 42-year-old man threw a fit when he couldn’t get any more snacks because the crew ran out of crackers. Continue reading →

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! I AM The Door

Door of sheep

When you go home at night how do you enter your house? Down the chimney? Though an open window? By digging a tunnel? Of course not!

You enter through a door. It might be a garage door. A side door. A back boor. Or an elaborate and expensive front door. It might be wood, metal or glass. But it’s a door.

Zach Anderson is in court today. Again. It’s the last place his parents, Les and Amanda Anderson, ever thought their 19-year-old son would be.

Zach is described as a “typical teen-ager. He’s into computers and wants to build a career around his love for electronics.” But his plans for the future are banished. At least for now. Continue reading →

Lobster

The late author Eda LeShan became noted for the “lobster story” reprinted in magazines, books and blogs through the years.  I recently came across it again and was challenged by its truth and simplicity.

LeShan tells about attending a dinner party and being seated next to an Oceanographer. She wondered, what will we talk about? Almost immediately the gentleman turned ask her, “Do you know how a lobster is able to grow bigger when its shell is so hard?” Continue reading →

Newsflash! All Lives Matter.

“We say so often … do black lives matter? And at the end of the day, we have to ask ourselves, do all lives matter — regardless of race, creed, color, economic status, what profession that person holds? All lives matter.”

The above quote is from an African-American, Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong. It was spoken at a news conference over the week-end following the murder of a Memphis police officer, Sean Bolton, 33, who was shot multiple times Saturday night. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition but later pronounced dead.  Continue reading →
