Beta Marriage: Another Bad Idea

BetaMarriage

“Getting married is so much more weighted today, I get the impulse to want to test it,” says Hannah Seligson, the 31-year-old married author of A Little Bit Married, about 20-somethings and long-term unmarried relationships.

Now there’s a new solution.  Beta Marriage! Continue reading

Word of the Week: Marriage

Gladness

Have you seen the TOP TEN REASONS GOD CREATED EVE?  It’s credited to anonymous.  But I think Eve wrote it!

10. God worried that Adam would always be lost in the garden because men hate to ask for directions.

9. God knew that Adam would one day need someone to hand him the TV remote. (Men don’t want to see what’s ON television, they want to see WHAT ELSE is on!)

8. God knew that Adam would never buy a new fig leaf when his seat wore out and would therefore need Eve to get one for him. Continue reading

ThePreachersWord's avatarThePreachersWord

It wasn’t easy for 59-year-old Margie White to ask her husband, Dick, for a divorce after 37 years of marriage.

“It really was the most courageous thing that I had to do,” she said.

How To Stay Married For 50 Years

“What’s your secret?” we are asked when people find out we’re celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary.

Since we are asked that question often, Norma Jean and I have come up with some answers we think have made our marriage work. “Secrets” that are not really secrets, but are not always practiced or even accepted by many people today.

In my last new post for the month of August, here are 5 specific things we think make a marriage work. At least they have contributed to the longevity of our relationship. Continue reading

Attributes of God From A to Z

Yesterday, as Norma Jean and I toured the National Museum of Archaeology in Athens and viewed the artifacts of the great thinkers and philosophers of Greece and Rome, it occurred to me that, despite their intellectual acumen, most did not truly know Jehovah God.

Yesterday’s post discussed Paul’s sermon, revealing to the Epicureans and Stoics “The Unknown God” as Jehovah God. Many mocked the apostle’s message. Regardless, God has revealed Himself to us. Continue reading

Making Known the “Unknown God”

Yesterday Norma Jean and I spent the morning touring the area of the  Areopagus and  The Parthenon, where the virgin goddess Athena was worshiped. Previously I had only seen pictures and visited the Athens of the south, Nashville, Tennesse and seen its replica.

It is amazing to see the actual Parthenon, built between 447 and 438 B.C. As I looked across to Areopagus Hill, I thought about the apostle Paul’s visit to this same city as recorded by Luke in Acts 17. Continue reading

Running the Christian Race

Yesterday Norma Jean and I toured the Panathenaic Stadium, a multi-purpose stadium in Athens, Greece. It is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble.

Originally  built in the 4th century B.C., it was rebuilt in 144 B.C. in marble by  Herodes Atticus, an Athenian Roman senator. After the 4th century it was abandoned until excavated in 1869 and hosted the Zappas Olympics in 1870 and 1875. After being refurbished, it was the site of the first modern Olympics in 1896. Worshiping in Athens

Yesterday was a unique and wonderful experience for Norma Jean and me.

The day began in a most unusual way as we slept in until 11:00 am. That has never happened on a Sunday morning. Obviously, we were catching up on the missed sleep on the flight from the United States to Greece.

After enjoying some local coffee and Greek pastry, we ventured out to explore some of the sites close to our apartment. Following an enjoyable lunch with the best gyros I’ve ever eaten, we hurried back to our temporary home to get ready for the 6:00 p.m. worship service in English. Continue reading

Annual Anniversary Blogging Break

Two or three times a year we take a break from blogging. This is one of those times. But this is the most unique. And a once in a lifetime occurrence.

It is a celebration of our 50th anniversary. And it is out of the country. We are leaving this morning from Chicago, O’Hare. (Thanks to Steve Wolfgang for the park and fly service) Continue reading

God Answers Prayers

“A Georgia teenager wrote a letter to God and then sent it to the clouds attached to helium balloons – and was shocked this week when she received a response,” reported Michael Foust in ChristianHeadlines.com

“The 18-year-old teen girl, Mykehia Curry,” Foust wrote, “was inspired to write a letter to God about her financial situation. She is planning to attend college.”

“God help me go to college. God this is me again, please help me get everything I need to leave Wednesday. I love you, Amen,” the letter read, according to WMAZ-TV. Continue reading
