This year I’ve been trying to improve my eating habits. Mainly reducing my sugar intake. And eliminating late-night junk food snacking.
I recently read that good nutrition is simple. To eat right, simply fill your plate with brightly colored foods. Greens. Reds. And Yellows.

Terry Denis tells a story about a college professor, an atheist, who gave a lecture denying the existence of God. He cited book after book, scholar after scholar and a variety of “evidences” to prove there’s no God.
As the professor concluded, a man stood up eating an apple and asked: “This apple that I’m eating, tell me, is it sweet or is it sour?”

Ron Thomas tells a story about an elderly woman who stood on a very busy street corner in rush hour traffic. She was fearful, confused, and hesitant to cross by herself.
Finally, a gentleman came up to her and asked if he could cross the street with her. Grateful and very relieved, she took his arm and stepped into the busy intersection. As they proceeded, she grew progressively alarmed as he zigzagged randomly across the street, to the blare of horns and screech of locked brakes. Continue reading

Yesterday Norma Jean and I worshiped with the brethren at the Valrico church where I taught the Bible class and preached at the morning service.
It was wonderful to return to a church we’ve visited many times in the past and held meetings. I remember when the church began. My parents were a part of the original group when the church was planted. Several of those brethren are still there. Continue reading

Today I want to share a post from five years ago from a column we did for almost three years. There are over 160 other posts on this theme “It’s Friday. It was 800 miles from the North African city of Cyrene in Lybia to Jerusalem.The journey was long and arduous. But the time, effort and expense would be worth it. No doubt this dark-skinned man, a Hellenistic Jew, named Simon, was eagerly anticipating the feast days. The Passover. The fellowship. The communion with other worshipers. An opportunity to honor the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
We don’t know if it was his first trip. Or his last. Or maybe he settled there. But we can know this. He never forgot it. And neither did his sons, Rufus and Alexander.

“Great” is a simple but wonderfully expressive English word that may describe people, experiences, opportunities, material things, or ideas and ideals.
To speak of something being great we are saying it is remarkably outstanding. Highly significant. Especially notable. Extraordinarily wonderful. Exceedingly substantial. Great is enormous. Immense. Tremendous.

Scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer once said “The best way to send an idea is to wrap it up in a person.”
Theologically, that concept is expressed in one word, incarnation, which means “in the flesh.” That’s Jesus. The incarnation of God. He sent His “idea” to humankind in the person of Jesus.

This past Sunday morning Norma Jean and I visited the University church in Tampa. This congregation holds a special place in our hearts. It’s the church we attended when we were dating and first married.

If you google the word “abstinence” you will get 18 million hits. While I didn’t check all of them, a quick perusal shows the word is most often used regarding chastity. Especially dealing with teenagers refraining from sexual activity.
