A Passage To Ponder: Psalm 1

There’s a 1970s song, “Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool Ya,” released by the late Wilson Pickett, and later performed and recorded by a number of pop and country artists. The opening lines go like this.

Girl, try to remember when we didn’t have no shoes
We stuck together, just me and you
It took a long time to get what we got today
Now you wanna give it all up for another guy Continue reading

What Will You Do in the Next 179 Days?

Last Sunday I was blessed to preach for the Wellandport Church in Wainfleet, Ontario, Canada. I have spoken there many times over the past few years, but it’s always a special treat to be with these wonderful brethren.

The Shepherds asked me to present lessons this month on my series “Let’s Renew in ‘22,” my preaching and writing theme this year. My keynote lesson takes the form often used in a New Year’s sermon, challenging us to take inventory of our lives, reevaluate our priorities, and set goals.

It occurred to me that we’re at a halfway point in the year, which is not a bad time to reexamine ourselves. Have your New Year’s resolutions, and 2022 goals fallen by the wayside? Continue reading

Friday’s List To Live By #91

Marc and Angel Chernoff are New York Times best-selling authors, professional coaches, bloggers, and self-proclaimed “ full-time students of life.”

Some time ago I came across an article by Marc about toxic behaviors that hinder our success and happiness in life. I suppose you could say that today’s list, is NOT one to live by. If your life is not what you want it to be, maybe some of these behaviors are holding you back. Continue reading

1 Thessalonians 5:18 and the Will of God

This morning I received this nice email from a sister in Wisconsin with a comment and a question.

“I watched your lesson entitled,” How do I Connect with God” last week, Tuesday. What an excellent lesson!”

“I do need help in understanding how happenstance jives with 1Thessalonians 5:18, ‘In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.’ You really made me think, I just need help understanding this.”

“I cultivated the habit of thanking God FOR EVERYTHING, quickly.  If it was sad news I would thank God. After hearing your lesson I’m not sure about this. Then I heard your lesson and I believe my reasoning/thinking is off and I don’t know how to reconcile these two and make them mesh. I would appreciate it if you could guide me to right thinking.”

A Passage To Ponder: Matthew 6:1-8

An older man was walking on the beach and found a lamp. Instinctively he rubbed it, and to his surprise, a genie appeared.

“Because you have freed me,” the genie said, “I will grant you one wish.”

The man thought for a moment and then responded, “My brother and I had a fight 30 years ago and he hasn’t spoken to me since. I wish that he would finally forgive me.”

There was a thunderclap, and the genie declared, “Your wish has been granted.” Continue reading

Three Responses To the Reversal of Roe

I was one of those who doubted that Roe v Wade would ever be overturned. Last Friday’s Supreme Court Decision by a 6-3 majority proved me wrong. Thankfully.

In the past 10 ten years, ThePreachersWord has published  19 posts regarding the sin of abortion. While we’ve been focused on the Biblical teaching regarding the sanctity of life and the grave moral wrong of abortion, it’s worth noting some key sentences from the majority opinion written by Justice Alito. Word of the Week: Amiability

Unless you’ve recently read Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice, you probably haven’t thought of or used the word amiable lately, a word she uses rather frequently.

Maybe it was more of a 19th-century word. However, we could probably use a revival of the word and a renewal of the behavior it embodies given our 21st-century propensity for rudeness, rage, and just bad manners. Continue reading

The Worth Of Worship

The etymology of our English word “worship” as spoken in the days of William Shakespear was actually pronounced “worth-ship.”

It’s derived from the old English word “weorp” which means to assign worth to someone. The online dictionary of etymology defined it as “significant, valuable, of value; valued, appreciated, highly thought-of, deserving, meriting; honorable, noble, of high rank; suitable for, proper, fit, capable.”

“Ship” from the old English word “sciepe” speaks to the idea or quality of being or condition…power, position, office, or skill.

Worship, therefore, assigns honor, praise, and glory to Him who is worthy and who is valued. Thus, the Psalmist proclaims: Continue reading
