How To Overcome a Culture of Crassness?

Crude. Coarse. Crass.  These words often describe our culture today.  It is seen and heard in all segments of our society as people interact in business, sports and politics.  It is evident in the entertainment industry.  And is too often witnessed in the way young people talk to one another.

So what’s the solution to this national epidemic of  abrasive behavior?  It’s a  simple Bible command.  Often overlooked.  Easily ignored.  Difficult to do, sometimes. Continue reading

THE ABC’S OF THANKSGIVING

Here’s wishing each of you a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!  Enjoy the day of food, fun, and family. And maybe some football! ThePreachersWord is going to take a Thanksgiving break for the next couple of days.  We will repeat two of our more popular posts from the past several months tomorrow and Friday.

Today’s “Thanksgiving” post is my application of the song, “Count your many blessings.”   A fun way to do this is to take the alphabet and list some of them. Some are spiritual.  Some  physical. Some personal. And little things we take for granted. Continue reading

The Most Important Election in History

Tomorrow we vote.  Our nation elects a new President.  If the polls are accurate, the race is too close to call.  One poll favors Obama.  Another Romney.  And one says they are even.  Because of their differing views this election looms as one that will  dramatically impact the direction and future of our country. Thinking about “the election” demands a few important thoughts from ThePreachersWord.  Here’s my view. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Three Symbols: Cup, Cross and Crown

Symbols in similar manner identify a sports team.  A political party.  A fast food restaurant. Or an athletic shoe.   Continue reading

Kids Say The Funniest Things

Kids say the funniest things. While I can’t vouch for the accuracy of all of these, I can imagine they really could happen.

One dad told about driving with his three young children one warm summer evening when some kids in a controvertible passed them. Suddenly a young woman in the back seat stood up waved. She was stark-naked! As I was reeling from shock and before I could say a word, My 5 year old shouted, “Mom! Look! That lady isn’t wearing a seat belt!” Continue reading

Bulletin Bloopers!

In addition to this daily I blog, I still write a bulletin for the Hickman Mills church where I preach in Kansas City.  Occasionally mistakes and misspelled words will creep in.  Ok, maybe more than occasionally!  But some of the funniest things are sometimes accidentally written in church bulletins.  These have been around for years, but are still some of my favorites. IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! The Day the Disciples Deserted Jesus

The Psalmist prophesied it.  Jesus predicted it would happen.  Within hours.  Peter emphatically denied it could ever occur.  And so nodded all the disciples in agreement.  They would never  do that!  Do what?   Continue reading
