Jesus.Gethsename2

Struggle.  Sorrow.  Supplication.  These words describe Jesus in Gethsemane’s garden as Thursday turned into Friday.

The apostles?  Surely they sensed it.  The hour was late.  Much had happened.  The last supper.  Washing feet.  Judas’ departure.  And the ensuing walk across the Kedron valley with Jesus teaching.  Encouraging. Comforting. Promising.

Great Verses Of The Bible: Philippians 2:12

The doctrine of “faith only is a most wholesome doctrine and very full of comfort.” This a quote from the Articles of an American denominational creed book.

For centuries there has been a debate about the role of faith and works regarding one’s salvation. Another popular phrase is that salvation is “through faith alone by grace alone.”

What does the Bible say? Continue reading

Word of the Week: Perspective

Thomas B. Wheeler, who served as CEO of the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company for many years loves to tell this story on himself.

Wheeler and his wife were driving along an interstate highway when he noticed that their car was low on gas. He got off the highway at the next exit and soon found a rundown gas station with just one gas pump. He asked the lone attendant to fill the tank and check the oil, then went for a little walk around the station to stretch his legs. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: 1John 4:8

There is a story of a medieval monk who announced he would be preaching next Sunday evening on “The Love of God.”

As the shadows fell and the light ceased to come in through the cathedral windows, the congregation gathered. In the darkness of the altar, the monk lighted a candle and carried it to the crucifix. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Ephesians 1:3

Charles Spurgeon once referred to R. C. Chapman, the British evangelist, as “the saintliest man I ever knew.”

One morning Chapman was asked how he was feeling. “I’m burdened this morning!” was his reply.

However, his happy countenance contradicted his words. So the questioner exclaimed in surprise, “Are you really burdened, Mr. Chapman?” Continue reading

Overcoming a Bad Beginning

How many sporting events have you seen a team get off to a rocky start, find themselves trailing at halftime, but rallied to win the game? Or a runner back in the pack, but finishes strong to win the race. It happens. A lot.

Author Jim George was right when he wrote, “It’s not how you start that’s important, but how you finish.” Continue reading

Spiritual Immunization

Recently in our adult Bible class at West Main we were studying the temptation of Jesus in Matthew 4. Leah Farquhar, who is a school nurse and the wife of one of our Shepherds, offered this insightful analogy.

“When Jesus was tempted by Satan, He answered each temptation with ‘It is written.’ This reminded me of Psalm 119:11, “Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” Continue reading

Two Evangelists Charged. Tried. Convicted.

Today, we conclude our top 10 posts of the year. This one is unique for 2 reasons. It is our first post to receive well over 100,000 reader views. Also due to some additional information, it required a follow-up clarification which was the #2 post of the year. You can click the link at the bottom of the post to read the follow-up, which I hope you do. Regardless, of the specific facts concerning the men involved, the point of both posts remains valid. Read with that thought in mind.

Yesterday a Bristol Magistrates’ Court in Great Britain convicted two men, Michael Overd and Michael Stockwell on “public order offences.”

What did they do that resulted in their arrest and conviction?

Was it public indecency? Disturbing the peace? Inciting a riot? Sexual harassment? Discharging a firearm? Disorderly conduct?

No. It was none of the above. I had to fact check this story, because it almost sounded like something from Babylon Bee.

People Who Need Financial Assistance Due To Hurricane Harvey

This September post about brethren affected by Hurricane Harvey was shared hundreds of times on facebook and received thousands of “hits” making it the 3rd most viewed in 2017. I am reblogging it to thank all of our readers for their help in assisting those in need. And to remind us that recovery is still a work in progress. No doubt there are those who are still ” underwater” financially due to this catastrophic event.

We’ve had several calls, texts, and emails from friends around the country about the flooding situation in Texas. We’re in North Texas in the DFW Metroplex and were not affected by the storm. However,  many  brethren in and around the Houston area were seriously impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

ThePreachersWord is sharing the following information, taken from the facebook page, Church of Christ families: Hurricane Relief Efforts, in an effort to further spread the word about how and who you can help.

Word of the Week: Joy

Coming in at #4 in 2017 in terms of “hits” was a 2013 post on the word “Joy.”  We’re not sure why this post resurfaced.  But we’re glad our readers enjoyed it.

joy2

“There is no virtue in the Christian life which is not made radiant with joy,” wrote William Barclay. “There is no circumstance and no occasion which is not illuminated with joy.  A joyless life is not a Christian life, for joy is the one constant in the recipe of Christian living.”

The word of the week is joy.
