The Heart

“The heart is central,” wrote John Eldredge in his book The Ransomed Heart. “That I would even need to remind you of this only shows how far we have fallen from the life we were meant to live—or how powerful the spell has been.” Continue reading

Three Elements of a Great Life

“No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated and disciplined.” penned Harry Emerson Fosdick, a preacher of the early 20th century.

Think about that a minute Continue reading

Our Hope

“If I am asked what are the grounds for my hope, this is my answer: LIGHT is lord over darkness. TRUTH is lord over falsehood. LIFE is lord over death.” (Gerhard Frost, “Seasons of a Lifetime)

As I read these words, I thought this is what our hope is about. It is what Jesus is about. It is what this day is about. It is what the Communion is about. Continue reading

The Gift and The Giver

“The gift without the giver is bare.”  —James Russell Lowell

These words by the America poet remind us of the importance of giving with the right spirit, and the right attitude, No one wants to receive a gift that is given by compulsion. But a gift given with care and consideration, with purpose and pleasure is one that is appreciated Continue reading

Healing Hurts

“We’re hurting,” solemnly declared Dallas Police Chief, David Brown, in a news conference Friday following the senseless shooting by a sniper Thursday night that killed five cops.

Hurting. It describes the Dallas police force right now. Families are hurting. Their professional colleagues are hurting. The greater community is hurting. Continue reading

Family Time

This week we are enjoying some family time in Florida.

With our daughter-in-law, April, being in Residency, this is only a once or twice a year opportunity for all of us to be together at one time. To share food and fun. To reminisce. To recall funny stories. To dream about the future. And to enjoy our two adorable grandsons, Roy and Miles. Continue reading

Involvement in Worship

“Worship isolated from involvement is a bland and meaningless exercise,” wrote Warren Hamby.

Involvement has to do with activity. Commitment. It means “to engage or employ.” “To engage the interest or emotions.” “To absorb fully.”

If we are passive in worship, disengaged and sit waiting for something to happen to us, we will be disappointed in the service. We may leave saying, “I didn’t get anything out of it. Continue reading

Preaching

While on his third missionary journey, Paul came to Troas where he spent the week. He met with the brethren. Worshipped. Communed. And preached. (Acts 20:6-7)

Preaching. It’s been a part of worship since the first century church began on that Pentecost Sunday in Acts 2. Peter preached. He preached Jesus. His death. Burial. Resurrection. And ascension. He preached God’s plan for salvation. Continue reading

A Good Word

For nine years during the 1970’s and 1980’s I preached in Palmetto, Florida. Our family has many fond memories of the brethren during that time.

One brother, D. B. Whittle, was especially an interesting fellow. He lived to be 105. When I would walk in his room at the nursing home, he would quickly sit up on the side of his bed, give me an enthusiastic handshake and always asked, “Preacher, what do you know good?” Continue reading

The Supper

Today is a special day for all Christians. It’s Sunday.

As we do every Sunday, we celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.

Our worship today, like last Sunday as well as next Sunday, will center around The Supper. The Lord’s Supper. It is a solemn and serious event when we eat the Lord’s Supper. Paul, in his rebuke of the Corinthians made that quite clear.

Warren Wiersbe suggests four things that will help us in “discerning the Lord’s Body.” Continue reading
