Lean On Me: People Supporting People

Jayde Powell, is a University of Nevada honors student whose idea to help others during the coronavirus crisis has sparked a movement that’s spread into all 50 states and around the world.

Powell, a Pre-Med student, started “Shopping Angels,” an organization that provides “free shopping services to those populations at higher risk of contracting the novel COVID-19 virus, to include individuals over the age of 60 or those with impaired immune systems,” as stated on their facebook page. Word of the Week: Refuge

In the Old Testament, when Israel conquered, divided and possessed the land of Canaan, God designated six special cities called the “Cities of Refuge.”

These cities were a place of safety for the man who accidentally killed another person. It was a place where he could flee and find protection from “the avenger of blood.” Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Social Distancing, Not Spiritual Distancing

By now we’ve all received the message loud and clear from our President, Vice-President as well as Dr. Fauci and Dr. Brix to practice “social distancing.” Stay home. And if you do go out for a walk, to the grocery, or to a carry out restaurant, stay 6 feet apart from others.

These mitigation efforts have forced almost all churches to temporarily suspend public assemblies. No Sunday morning or Wednesday Bible classes. No Sunday worship. No ladies classes. No gospel meetings. No potlucks. All of this social distancing can leave us feeling disconnected, detached and even disjointed spiritually. Continue reading

In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, my friend and preaching colleague, Mark Roberts, who’s the editor of Pressing On, has dedicated the April issue to many of the concerns Christians have during this unprecedented time in our history.

Today’s blog post offers you a link to receive this issue free, compliments of Mark. In it you will find scriptural and timely articles that will help you navigate the maze of questions and challenges you may be dealing with Continue reading

Word of the Week: Calm

Yesterday in the Rose Garden, President Trump announced the government is extending the social distancing guidelines until April 30th. In essence the country continues to be closed.

The President’s health experts warned that no area of the country is going to be spared from the effects of COVID-19. If the predictions are accurate the outbreak of the virus and those dying as a result will not peak for another two weeks.

All of this raises questions in the minds of many Continue reading

Is it Wrong to Observe the Lord’s Supper at Home?

Earlier this week, we asked the question, “Is it wrong for churches to cancel worship services?” I appreciate the many positive comments regarding the post.

However, as one of our readers responded, “This brings up another question. Is it scriptural to partake of the Lord’s Supper individually at home?”

Others have asked and commented on this issue as well. Here are a few thoughts for your serious and prayerful consideration. Continue reading

How To Feel Peace When Plagued with Problems?

During these chaotic, uncertain and unprecedented times many people are feeling distressed, disquieted, and disturbed.

However, the absence of a peaceful, calm and tranquil spirit is not all due to the current crisis of the coronavirus. For many this predicament only added more pressure to many other pressing problems.

If people of faith who’ve enjoyed a relatively good life are experiencing some feelings of anxiety, apprehension or even alarm, what do you think people who were already dealing with financial problems, relationship conflicts, or depression are feeling? What about those whose faith is weak? Or who have no faith? Or no support system Continue reading

Is it Wrong for Churches to Cancel Services?

This question raised today reminds me of the old joke about the politician who was asked by a reporter his position on a particular issue.

“Well, there are two ways to look at it,” he responded. Then launched into a lengthy explanation of both views, giving both the pros and cons of the respective positions. He concluded by saying he had friends on both sides of the question.

“But what’s your position?” the reporter pressed. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Prudence

When George H.W. Bush was President, comedian Dana Carvey made a living by imitating Bush on Saturday Night Live. As he spoofed the President, Carvey made popular the phrase: “Wouldn’t be prudent!”

While the President could have become irritated and resentful of Carvey, Bush demonstrated prudence by inviting Carvey and his wife to the White House. Apparently the two became good friends and dispelled any rumors that Bush held a grudge against Carvey. Continue reading
