Thank God For Veterans

Yesterday was veterans day.  It is day to honor those who have served in our military.  Both living and dead. To thank them for their service. To celebrate their contribution. To remember their sacrifice.  Continue reading

One Person Can Make a Difference

This morning Norma Jean and I are going to vote for the first time in Missouri.  While we’re not in a swing state in the Presidential race, we believe it’s important to exercise our constitutional right and privilege as American citizens.

But Ohio…well, that’s another story!  Everything goes through Ohio.  It has for a long time.  Let me share a story that goes back a few years. Continue reading

What Does God See in the Dark Corners of Your Life?

Someone has written a humorous piece about what some mothers of famous people could have said:

MONA LISA’S MOTHER: “After all that money your father and I spent on braces, Mona, that’s the biggest smile you can give us?”

JONAH’S MOTHER: “That’s a nice story, but now tell me where you’ve really been for the last three days.”

HUMPTY DUMPTY’S MOTHER: “Humpty, if I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a hundred times not to sit on that wall. But would you listen to me? Noooo!” Continue reading

Holy, Hallowed and Halloween

Hallow.  It isn’t a word commonly used today.  When the model prayer of Jesus is repeated, we say, “Hallowed be Thy name” (Matt. 6:9).  More often the word is identified with the last day of October, in which we in the United States refer to Halloween, which means “all Hallow’s Eve.” Continue reading

“I’m tired of doing things my way.”

Yesterday I had a Bible study with a man named Mike.  As we began he shared with me some personal things about his life.  Then he looked me in the eye and said, “I’m tired of doing things my way.”  Continue reading

Sail On!

Today is Columbus Day. It is a day that Americans celebrate the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492.  Some say that America was really discovered by Norse Vikings, Irish missionaries or the ten lost tribes of Israel!  But the fact is Columbus was successful in his quest and returned to the old World to spread the good news.  Continue reading

Are You Living in the “Almost”?

In a particular  PEANUTS cartoon, the team “statistician” brings Charlie Brown, the manager, his report.

“I’ve compiled the statistics on our baseball team for last season,” Linus says. “In 12 games we ALMOST scored a run and in 9 games the other team ALMOST didn’t score before the first out. In right field, Lucy ALMOST caught 3 balls and once ALMOST made the right play.”

“We led the league,” he concludes, “in ‘ALMOSTS,’ Charlie Brown.” Continue reading

Fight One More Round

It happened 120 years ago. On September 7, 1892, James J. Corbett won the first heavyweight championship prize-fight in which the contestants used boxing gloves. Corbett won the match against John L. Sullivan with a knockout in the twenty-first round.  That’s right the 21st round!  However three-year earlier Corbett had to go 27 rounds, boxing with bare knuckles, to defeat fellow hall-of-famer Joe Choynski.

James J. Corbett also had a way with words.  Knowing his background, we can appreciate them even better when he said: Continue reading

Don’t Drop The Ball!

“He dropped the ball,” is an American idiom we use to  describe someone who didn’t do the job right.  Or  failed to complete an assignment.  Or can’t be depended on.  Or blundered in some way.  It means to make an error, or to miss an opportunity.  For instance, we say “the goal was in sight, but John dropped the ball.” Do you know where the expression originated? Continue reading
