4 Reasons To Read the Bible

Bible.Purpose

In his book, “God in My Corner,” former heavyweight boxing champion, George Foreman, shares this personal story about the Bible.

“In 1974, before I went to Africa to fight Muhammad Ali, a friend gave me a Bible to take along on my trip. He said, “George, keep this with you for good luck.”

“I believed the Bible was just a shepherd’s handbook, probably because the only verse I knew was “the Lord is my shepherd.” But I was always looking for luck, so I carried that Bible with me. I had lucky pennies and good luck charms, so now I added the “lucky” Bible to my collection of superstitious items.” Continue reading

“If You’re Gonna Talk About Jesus….”

jesus-bibleSeveral years ago I heard a true story that a grandfather told about his precocious, 4 year old  grandson, Conner, who loved going to Bible class at church.

One Sunday the teacher announced, “Today we are going to talk about Jesus.”

Immediately little Conner stood up, thrust his hands onto his hips, looked at the teacher and authoritatively replied, Continue reading

Searching The Depths!

HolySpiritOn this day in history 83 years ago William Beebe set a record.  On June 11, 1930, Beebe dove to a record-setting depth of 1,426 feet off the coast of Bermuda. He used a diving chamber, invented by Otis Barton,  called a bathysphere.

This caught my eye because of the derivation of the word “bathysphere.”  It’s a compound word. The first part comes from the Greek word “bathos” which means deep.   It’s used by Paul in explaining the revelation of God’s Word by the Holy Spirit.  Continue reading

Bible.Light.2Two men. Two views of the Bible.  One man is known world-wide.  The other man is unknown, except for a small circle of friends.  One man is bombastic and out-spoken.  The other man is plainspoken and unpretentious. One man is on TV.  The other man watches TV.

Two men.  Bill O’Reilly.  Nathan Eve.  Continue reading

7 Lessons Learned From Saul’s Flaws

The BibleWe’ve been watching the History Channel’s presentation of The Bible from Executive Producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett.  The reaction has been interesting.

Movie critics called it “fractious and overwrought,” “a further piece of evidence that drama and reverence don’t mix well,” and “a mini-series full of emoting that does not register emotionally.”

Predictability the Christian Post and similar news outlets have hailed The Bible as “awesome,” inspiring, and “spot on.” Continue reading

Should Christians Quit Saying “The Bible is the Word of God”?

Bibe.MS“It isn’t inerrant and not likely even in the “original manuscripts.” But then, I cannot say that with absolute certainty, anymore than anyone else can either, writes Steve McSwain in the Huffington Post regarding the Bible.

McSwain, who is billed as a “Thought Leader, author, speaker and spiritual teacher,” posted this under the title “Six Things Christians should just stop Saying.”   Why does McSwain make this charge?  His answer? Continue reading

What Do Past Presidents Think of the Bible?

Presidents.Day.Bible“It is impossible to rightly govern without God and the Bible, once affirmed our first President George Washington.  In his farewell address, September 19, 1796, Washington said, “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of right and order which Heaven itself has ordained. … Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.”  Continue reading
