“If You’re Gonna Talk About Jesus….”

jesus-bibleSeveral years ago I heard a true story that a grandfather told about his precocious, 4 year old  grandson, Conner, who loved going to Bible class at church.

One Sunday the teacher announced, “Today we are going to talk about Jesus.”

Immediately little Conner stood up, thrust his hands onto his hips, looked at the teacher and authoritatively replied,

“Well, if you’re gonna talk about Jesus, you need to get a Bible in your hands!”

Conner may have deserved a “C” in conduct, but give him an “A” for accuracy!””

Jesus said, “You search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me” (Jn 5:39). If we want to know Jesus we must go to the Bible. Too often, we listen to what others say about Jesus, read about what men write about Jesus, but never go to the source to get it first hand.

In fact, Jesus did that very thing. More than once. Following the resurrection when he joined the two men on the Emmaus road who were distraught at the events surround Jesus’ crucifixion.

The Bible says, “So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.”

Jesus asked, “Why are you so sad?”

They were astounded! The opined that he was a stranger in Jerusalem, the only one who didn’t know what had occurred in the past few days.

Jesus inquired, “What things?”

And so they begin to tell him about Jesus! Their hope in Him. The rejected of the religious leaders. His death. And now the empty tomb.

At that point Dr. Luke records, “And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself” (Lk.24:47)

When the Ethiopian Treasurer was riding home in his chariot reading the Scripture, the evangelist Philip encountered him and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?

The Treasurer indicated he needed some guidance and invited Philip to join him in the chariot to study.  The text was a Messianic prophecy from Isaiah 53.

“Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” the Treasurer asked.

The Bible says, “Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. (Acts 8:26-35, NIV)

The Scripture testifies about Jesus. It tells us who He is.  Why He came to earth.  He is the Good News for a wayward world.  And he is the way to God.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

During this time of year, we hear a lot about Jesus. But not all of it is accurate.  Furthermore, exalting the person of Jesus without receiving,  believing and obeying the Word of Jesus becomes a fruitless exercise.  It will only  result in a shallow spiritually. Unfulfilled discipleship. And finally disappointment in the day of Judgment.

You need to get a Bible in your hands!
