Why Do You Need The Book?

Bible.CheckUP

“Are you Running on Spiritual Fumes?” was the title of a post last week. It spoke to the need of engaging in regular Bible study. We suggested that if you are spiritually sputtering through life, you need to refuel with God’s Word, the Bible.

One of my readers responded with this comment. “Religion is poor people’s shield….Weaker people need a book to depend (on). Why (do) you need a book when the Almighty is here with you?

Are You Running on Spiritual Fumes?

Running on empty

I have some great facebook friends who post some meaningful, insightful and often challenging thoughts that inspire and encourage me. The following is from Sheri Mauck, the wife of a preaching colleague, Tony Mauck, that she posed a few days ago.

“If you are a grown-up Christian who was ‘raised right’, learning the Bible in Bible class, hearing sermons, singing songs and you think you already ‘know’ the Bible so you don’t read it EVERY DAY, because you ‘already know it’, you will find that you are struggling to grow.” Continue reading

Should We Guided by Law or Love?

Pope.Francis.Joy of love

“Pope stresses spirit over rules” read the front page headline of Saturday’s Kansas City Star.

The article reported Pope Francis’ news conference at the Vatican Friday unveiling his latest 260 page writing entitled “Amoris Letitia” or “The Joy of Love.” According to the article “Francis’ worldwide challenge (is) to minister to the consciences of people in all their fragile imperfections and not be cornered by rigorous doctrine.” Continue reading

Is the Bible Outdated and Unreliable?

Bible.Question2

My recent post on gender identity has elicited a good bit of reaction from readers, especially on facebook. It has been shared hundreds of times. Most have commended the post, but not everyone. One reader expressed her disagreement this way.

“To keep trying to reason this out with ancient language from a religious text that NOT everyone follows is hurtful, damaging, a complete waste of time, pointless, and mean.” Continue reading

5 Things I Know

Questions.5

Leon Mauldin tells about seeing a message on a church marquee that read:  “A church with few answers, many questions, but great faith.”  On the surface that sounds good.  It sounds humble.  Here is a church open, willing to consider everything from a fresh perspective.  A church not rigid, not bound by traditionalism.  Continue reading

A GPS FOR LIFE

GPS.Jesus

“What if you could have a GPS for your life?” asks author and leadership coach Michael Hyatt.

Hyatt then relates a personal story of getting lost one time on a hike in the Colorado Rockies when he “got confused, and took the wrong path down the mountain.”

Fortunately Hyatt had a smart phone that picked up a signal and he was able to find his way back. Continue reading

God’s Love and Mercy for Sinners

Great Bible Themes

“Great Bible Themes” is the focus of the 36th annual Southside Lecture. My preaching colleagues and I began with four fundamental lessons that speak to human need and God’s empathy for the human race.

Don Truex addressed “The Disastrous Effects of Sin.” Roger Shouse shared “The Vastness and Beauty of God’s Love.” Kenny Moorer expounded on “The Wideness of God’s Mercy.” And I spoke of “The Joy of Fellowship with God.”

These four great themes deal with the reality of life. The nature of mankind. The need that is common to us. And the nature and personality of our Creator. Continue reading

“Cherry-Picking” The Scripture

Cherry Picking

I have a regular reader, Stephen, who often comments on our posts. Not always, but many of his comments and disagreements address my stance on same-sex marriage.

I’m not singling out Stephen. His responses are publicly posted on this site. He has been kind, considerate, and often complimentary. For the benefit of all readers, I want to answer some of his questions.

“Could you talk about “cherry picking” Scripture?” Stephen asked. Continue reading

Sometimes You Need To Dig!

Bible.Digging

The brochure on our door says, “Hello, Lee’s Summit. Fiber is here.” That’s google fiber.

The ad proclaims it’s “Super fast internet. Powerful Wi-Fi. A DVR like no other.” I checked the google web page, their internet speed is 1,000 megabits per second. Mine is 15! In a race google fiber would finish in 4 seconds. It would take me over 4 minutes!

I’m watching with interest as workers are invading our neighbor installing the cable. However, the other day while driving down the street and navigating the trucks, equipment, and workers something struck me as interesting. Continue reading

9 Things I know

Parrot

My good friend, the late R. J. Stevens, loved to tell stories and jokes. This morning I was reminded of him when I came across this one. I heard him tell it several times.

A lady is walking around a pet store enjoying looking at the various animals when she stops to admire a parrot. Suddenly the parrot says, “Braaaaaak, Hey lady, you’re really ugly!”  Continue reading
