What Does it Means to be “Christian”?

A recent survey revealed that 71% of the respondents claiming to be a Christian “consider their feelings, experiences, or the input of family and friends as their most trusted sources of moral guidance.”

The study, recently released by the George Barna Group in connection with the cultural research center at the University of Arizona, came to this conclusion: Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: Proverbs 13:20

Yesterday’s online INC magazine headlined an article by Marcel Schwantes with this captivating lead-in:

It Took Warren Buffett 2 Sentences to Offer the Best Advice You Will Hear Today

Timeless wisdom from the Oracle of Omaha.

It caught my attention. What financial insight would Buffett share from his vast wealth of financial acumen? A portfolio change? A stock tip? A retirement strategy? Continue reading

Moving From Success To Significance

“If all your dreams came true, whose life would be different?”

This question was asked by Tim Tebow at the 13th annual Florida College Leadership Dinner that Norma Jean and I were privileged to attend last Thursday evening.

The former University of Florida quarterback who led the Gators to two national championships, won the Heisman Trophy following his sophomore season, and was a first-round NFL draft choice spoke passionately about making a difference in the lives of other people. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Persistence

Three thousand five hundred fifty(3,550) days ago I published my first blog post. Today WordPress says today’s post is #2800.

What began as a short-term idea during a gap between full-time preaching for local churches, has become a long-lasting ministry.

Posts have been written from almost every state and several countries. We’ve written when we felt like it and when we didn’t. When it was easy and when it was difficult. When thoughts were flowing freely and sometimes when the well was running dry. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: What Are You Bringing To Worship?

My older readers remember when every church had a printed bulletin and mailed them out. I used to get them from all over the country.

One of the regular writers who must have been a syndicated columnist was “Selected.” I suppose he was related to “Anonymous,” and “Anon” who were also regular contributors.

In my worship folder is a short list by “Brother Selected” on things to bring to worship and things to leave at home. Here they are with a few brief comments and scriptural references. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: September 12-17

Good morning from Beverly Hills, Florida

Norma Jean and I have had a wonderful week in a gospel meeting with the brethren in Marion, Indiana.  And enjoyed being house guests of Jack and Rhonda Wiley.

We returned to Florida Thursday in time to attend the 13th annual Florida College Leadership Dinner.  It was a great evening seeing many old friends from around the country and hearing the featured guest speaker Tim Tebow. Continue reading

Friday’s List To Live By #56

Today’s list has made the rounds over the years in various edited forms. It’s often titled “the greatest” or “‘the most” or simply a “good list to live by.”

Its author is unknown. But its underlying principles are both known and observed by those who practice them.

We’ve edited it. Again. May it offer you some reflective thought on what’s really important in life. Continue reading

The Power of our Thoughts

Man is made or unmade by himself; in the armory of thought he forges the weapons by which he destroys himself. He also fashions the tools with which he builds for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength and peace wrote, 19th century British author, James A. Allen.

In this classic book, As He Thinketh, Allen further observes, “By the right choice and true application of thought, man ascends to the Divine Perfection; by the abuse and wrong application of thought, he descends below the level of the beast. Between these two extremes are all the grades of character, and man is their maker and master. “ Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: 1Corinthians 15:35-49

Tonight, I’m concluding a meeting in Marion, Indiana, and preaching from 1 Corinthians 15 about death and the bodily resurrection.

Death.

It is a sobering word. A cold word. A frightening word. We don’t even like to say it. We prefer euphemisms. We say, “She passed away.’ “He expired.” “She’s gone.” In a lighter vein we speak of someone “pushing up daisies”, or “kicking the bucket,” Or being “six feet under.” Continue reading

Sin, Salvation, and Acceptance

Every news media outlet carried numerous stories regarding the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

The stories were often personal and poignant involving survivors from the twin towers, or the relatives of those that did not survive. Each was emotionally gripping in its own way.

One that we saw that was interesting and insightful was an interview on Fox News that Neil Cavuto had with an Episcopal Priest, Dr. Russell Levenson from Houston, Texas. Continue reading
