Friday’s List To Live By #99

This week I’ve  been writing about godliness.  Yesterday we discussed the key to godliness is discipline. To further follow up on that idea, today’s list, adapted and condensed from John MacArthur’s book, “The Pillars of Christian Character” offers some practical tips on developing discipline.

The list deserves greater attention and explanation than merely listing these points.  However, we will leave it to you, the reader, to reflect on and apply these important points. Continue reading

How to Grow in Godliness?

Thomas Monaghan,  the founder of Domino’s Pizza and its CEO from 1970 to 1985 grew a small debt ridden business to what is today the largest Pizza chain in the world with sales exceeding 8.6 billion dollars in 2021.

Once asked to account for the incredible growth of the company, Monaghan explained,  “I programed everything for growth. Everyday we develop people–the key to growth is developing people, not special cheese, not tasty crust, not fast delivery, but people.  People are the key to all effective leadership.” Continue reading

Applications of Godliness

“The key to godliness is not more knowledge,” opined Woodrow Knoll, “but more obedience.”

Indeed, godliness issues itself in following Jesus, daily bearing His cross, and willingly submitting to His commands (Lk. 9:23).  Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (Jn 14:15). The beloved John further amplified that fact when he wrote, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome” (1Jn. 5:3).  Continue reading

What is the Source of Godliness?

“If ideas have consequences, and they clearly do, the most consequential of all our ideas is the idea of God,” opined Gary Henry in his daybook Enthusiastic Ideas. “Nowhere does life ask us any more basic question, than when it asks us what we’re going to believe about God.”

Gary then argues that (1) if we are open to the idea that God exists, and (2) we accept the truth about God and make a commitment to Him, then this knowledge and belief should translate into a godly life. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Godliness

“Suppose you have a sponge and a pitcher of Pepsi. If you dip your sponge in the Pepsi and squeeze it, what’s going to come out?,” asks Derrick Tuper.

“ 7-Up?”

“No, when you squeeze a sponge soaked in Pepsi, Pepsi is going to come out.” Continue reading

Friday’s List To Live By #98

Almost all of our Friday lists involve positive steps we can apply to specific areas of our life. Today’s list, however, is all negative.

Yes. Negative.

It is taken from “Lists to Live By: The Christian Collection” complied by Alice Gray, Steve Stephens and John Van Diest. It is a list of behaviors we need to avoid.

Sometimes, we can learn how to live by seeing what to avoid. Consider this list prayerfully. Continue reading

The Joy of Faith

“There is no virtue in the Christian life which is not made radiant with joy; there is no circumstance and no occasion which is not illumined with joy,” opined William Barclay in his commentary on Philippians. “A joyless life is not a Christian life, for joy is the one constant in the recipe for Christian living.” Continue reading

James 1:13-16

In Discipleship Journal, Don McCullough tells a story from John Killinger about the manager of a minor league baseball team who was so disgusted with his center fielder’s performance that he ordered him to the dugout and assumed the position himself.

The first ball that came into center field took a bad hop and hit the manager in the mouth. The next one was a high fly ball, which he lost in the glare of the sun–until it bounced off his forehead. The third was a hard line drive that he charged with outstretched arms; unfortunately, it flew between his hands and smacked his eye. Continue reading
