Acts 18:24-25

Sometimes good isn’t good enough. The task requires 100%.

If 99.9% is good enough then…

  • 107 incorrect medical procedures will be performed by the end of the day today.
  • 22,000 transactions will be deducted from the wrong bank accounts in the next 60 minutes.
  • 268,500 defective tires will be shipped this year.

Fearless Faith in A Compromising Culture

This week at the Wellandport Church in Wainfleet, Ontario, Canada, I’m teaching the adult class in their annual VBS.

I love VBS. The unbridled excitement of the children. Their enthusiastic singing. Their eagerness to learn. And the passion of the teachers as they go the extra mile in their preparations to make VBS a memorable and mission driven experience. Continue reading

3 Things You Must Give Up If You Want to Grow Up

“The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it,” once wrote Henry David Thoreau.

In terms of being successful in life, John Maxwell refers to Thoreau’s thought as “the law of trade-offs.” In other words you have to give up to grow up.

This principle rings true in the area of spiritual growth. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: July 9-14

Greetings from Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada.

Or as locals in the region call it, “The Port.”  It’s a neat area with the Welland canal connecting Lake Ontario with Lake Erie.  It’s fascinating to watch these huge barges inch their way through the locks as they are lowered and raised.  If you ever come to Niagara Falls its worth a trip to see it.  While you can watch from The Port or one of the other 8 locks, one of the best places to watch is Lock 7 at Thorold, where there is a watching station. 7 Truths About Truth

Winston Churchill once quipped, “Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened.”

Truth today has fallen into disrepute. People casually speak of “my truth,” or “your truth”, as if absolute truth is non-existent.

My friend and preaching colleague, Perry Hall regularly posts on facebook a column he calls “A Pew Moments with Perry. He recently posted this wonderful piece about truth. Continue reading

Consensual Non-Monogamy

The New York Times recently reported that former NYC Mayor, Bill de Blasio, and his wife Chirlane McCray, are separating after nearly thirty years of marriage. However, they’re not getting a divorce. Or even moving to a separate residence.

Confused? Let me explain the new morality of “consensual non-monogamy.” Continue reading

Psalm 143

Norman Vincent Peale once told about finding a big, black cigar when he was a little boy. Quickly he slipped into an alley and lit it up. Peale said it didn’t taste good, but made him feel grown up. Until…. Continue reading

How To Deal With Sinful Impulses

“I Don’t Want My Son to Inherit the Sins of His Mother,” was the title of an article that caught my attention in Christianity Today online.

It was piece on parenting by Anna Taylor discussing the concern we should have for not only the physical health of our children, but more importantly their spiritual well being.

It was one of those articles in which I found myself alternating agreeing with and disagreeing with the author. Continue reading

What Will You Give Up To Grow Up?

Some time ago Forbes Magazine published a piece “Give Up…To Grow.” It was career advice for business and professional people about giving up a position, a job, or some aspect of control in order to be more successful.

The article spoke of getting out of one’s comfort zone, assuming risks, and “taking a leap of faith.” The point of the article was that financial, business and career success comes with a cost. You must be willing to give up something in order to grow. Continue reading

Greetings from Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada

We’ve had a great week here already.  Celebrating Canada Day (July 1) and our July 4th Independence Day.  Greater, however, is the wonderful association we enjoy with the brethren here in the Niagara Region.  In addition to Lord’s Day worship and Wednesday evening Bible study, we’ve enjoyed Sunday dinner, a cookout, Gelato, ice cream , a wonderful Italian dinner, and today a soccer game –all of this with many of our friends and  brethren in the area.
