Total Commitment

There’s an old fable about a chicken and a pig walking past an orphanage. The chicken said to the pig, ““We ought to do something nice for these children.”

“Yes”, said the pig. ““I agree. What did you have in mind?”

The chicken answered, “Why don’t we fix them a ham and egg breakfast?” Continue reading

Acts 9:31

Church growth. It’s a topic of interest to most preachers and pastors. Especially, as we witness the decline of so many churches today. And too often see young people leaving the church.

If you google church growth you will receive 402,000,000 responses in .50 seconds, which offer these insights. Continue reading

How Do You Express Love?

Kentucky author and minister Bob Russell told a story about one Valentine’s Day that he decided to something “extraordinarily romantic.”

As Bob passed by a flower shop he saw a promotion for a special Valentine’s Day package for $85. So, he purchased the beautiful bouquet of roses along with a “mushy card” that expressed his love for his wife, Judy.

Bob placed the roses and card on the kitchen counter and waited in the next room for Judy to return home from grocery shopping. Continue reading

Grow in Knowledge

On this President’s Day I’m reminded of some of the great quotes from past Presidents about the importance of Bible knowledge.

“It is impossible to rightly govern without God and the Bible,” once affirmed our first President George Washington.

John Quincy Adams, our 6th President expressed his feelings almost bluntly “The first and almost the only book deserving of universal attention is the Bible. I speak as a man of the world…and I say to you, “Search the Scriptures.” Continue reading

Living an Abounding, Abundant Life in the Lord

“The Good News concerning salvation is not only what we can be saved from, but what we are saved for,” affirmed Andy Cantrell as he presented the closing lesson at The Florida College Lectures last night.

This observation seemed a particularly fitting summation, not only of the week’s theme, “A Life Worthy of the Gospel,” but Thursday’s lecture focus. Joy, peace, comfort and hope were the four qualities addressed which spoke to the fruit of the gospel that should be manifest in our lives. Qualities in which we ought to be abounding and excelling Continue reading

When We Rightly Regard One Another

This week we are attending the annual Florida College Lectures. And while we are profiting from the lessons, we are enjoying the fellowship and renewing our friendship with so many from bygone years.

In fact the Wednesday morning lectures, actually addressed the importance of our relationships with one another. As Bible Chair Jason Longstreth enunciated in the book the Wednesday lectures will be focused on “our fellowship in the gospel.” The theme, “A Life Worthy of the Gospel, will be “explored through the lens of humility, unity, relationships and correction.” Continue reading

Applications of a Life Worthy of the Gospel

I love the theme of 2023 Florida College Lectures, “A Life Worthy of the Gospel.” It’s personal. Practical. And powerfully penetrating.

As explained by Bible Chair, Jason Longstreth, in the Preface to the lecture book, the evening lectures are “designed to help us examine the priority, distinctiveness, and fullness of the gospel.”

The day time lectures emphasize a specific area of application. Yesterday, the focus was “our thoughts, preaching, prayer and daily life.” While we were unable to attend all of these lectures, here are a few highlights quoted from the manuscripts in the lecture book. Continue reading

Conduct Worthy of the Gospel

This week Norma Jean and I are attending the Florida College Lectures in Temple Terrace, Florida. It’s my 56th consecutive year to attend this annual event.

This year’s theme is “A Life Worthy of the Gospel.” It’s generally based on studies from the Macedonian epistles. And specifically Paul’s exhortation in Philippians 1:27 “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ.”

Last night following 30 minutes of soul stirring, spirit lifting singing, Todd Chandler delivered a masterful and compelling keynote address entitled “Only Live Worthy of the Gospel: The Priority of the Gospel.” Continue reading

The Seed and Soil For Growth

Some time ago “Reader’s Digest” told the story about a company who mailed out some special advertising business post cards with a mustard seed glued to it with the following caption that went something like this:

“If you have faith as small as this mustard seed in our (product), you are guaranteed to get excellent results and be totally satisfied.” — Signed, The Management Continue reading
