Heard Any Good News Lately?

For the past several days the news media has played and replayed the senseless, horrific, inhumane beating of a black man in Memphis by five black ex-cops, who have since been charged with second degree murder.

In addition to that sickening story we’ve heard about…

…the murder trial of a prominent South Carolina man accused of killing his wife and son.

…a California mass shooting.

…another California mass shooting. Continue reading

Know Yourself To Grow Yourself

Although probably apocryphal, there’s an old story about a flight delayed with a long line of disgruntled passengers waiting to be rebooked by a single gate attendant.

Impatiently, a business tycoon pushes his way to the front of the line demanding to be rebooked immediately. The agent smiled sweetly and assured him she was doing her best, but he would have to wait in line like everyone else.

After several failed attempts to get his way, the man pounded the desk and bellowed, “Do you have any idea who I am?” Continue reading

White Noise

Matt Bassford is a fellow blogger and gospel preacher. Until recently, he preached at the Jackson Heights church in Columbia, Tennessee, where Norma Jean and I lived and labored for 11 years.

Matt also is batttling ALS, sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease.

During the past several months Matt has shown incredible strength, courage and resolve, as he has continued to minister in the Word. Through his blog, HisExcellentWord, Matt has inspired, motivated and encouraged us all to a higher level of living as he has candidly written about life and death. Sickness and suffering. Joy and pain. Mercy and grace. And the hope of eternal life. Continue reading

Expect Challenges

Growing up on a small farm in Central Indiana, I recall the conversations my Dad had with farmers in the area. Almost every year there was some challenge to be addressed.

Some years there is too much rain in the Spring, causing the crops to be planted later than was ideal. Other years it may be a drought. Or bugs and insects. Of course there is always the problem with weeds. Continue reading

Confidence

Recently my friend and preaching colleague, Leland Ping, posted a short piece about confidence that is worthy of our serious reflection and application.

“There are a number of things that we can be confident in,” Leland observed. “Our abilities. Our talents. Our finances. The list can go on and on. But, the things we are confident in are often the very things that we truly, in the end, cannot really count on.” Continue reading

The Measure of Our Maturity

Today we’re invoking a #ThrowbackThursday, by rebloging a post from Thursday, January 19, 2012, our first year of publication.

The tone and tenor of this post is in keeping with our current 2023 Theme, “Sowing Seeds for Spiritual Growth.” And its message is one for all time.

ThePreachersWord

Sometime ago I read a devotional piece by the minister and writer Bill Crowder.  He told about going to the Hallmark store to get a birthday card and came across one that read, “You are only young once, but you can be immature forever!”

I suppose if you are a fan of Peter Pan there is something attractive about never growing up.  But hopefully most Christians know that perpetual immaturity is not only inappropriate, but unacceptable.  Paul encourages us to mature through these words to the Ephesians.

Isaiah 41:10

According to the most-downloaded Bible app YouVersion, installed on over 500 million devices, the most shared Bible verse of 2022 is the same as 2020 during the rise of COVID. It also occupied the top spot in 2018.

It has universal application and shows how people felt and what or WHO is bringing them comfort. So, what does this verse offer that has such world-wide appeal?

Good Advice from Benjamin Franklin

Did you know that today is Benjamin Franklin day?

No. I didn’t either.

But according to my calendar of unusual and little known holidays, we celebrate the life of this great American patriot on his birthday, January 17th. Continue reading
