Playing Footloose with the Gospel

Our local newspaper, the Citrus County Chronicle bills itself as “Florida’s Best Community Newspaper Serving Florida’s Best Community.” Besides featuring local news, it carries columns not always found in big-city newspapers.

In addition to “Letters to the Editor,” the Chronicle has a “Sound Off” column where readers can call a hotline number and anonymously air their personal concerns, criticisms, and complaints. Or offer their commendation for something they like.

The other day a reader who said they had been residents for 8 years shared they visited 24 churches during their first 3 years, never finding a church to their liking. Continue reading →

A Passage To Ponder: Revelation 4

A Bible class teacher was explaining to the class that we really don’t know what Jesus looked like.

To illustrate, she showed a painting of Jesus, illustrating it was the painter’s rendition. “It’s not really Jesus. It’s just the artist’s conception of Him.”

One little fellow, looking long and hard at the painting finally said, “Well, it sure looks like him.” Continue reading →

What’s the Root Cause?

Last Thursday in an extraordinary exchange between White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki and Fox News reporter Peter Doocy, Paski implied COVID-19 was partly responsible for the recent rise in looting incidents across the country.

“So when a huge group of criminals organizes themselves and they want to go loot a store — a CVS, a Nordstrom, a Home Depot until the shelves are clean — do you think that’s because of the pandemic?” Doocy pressed. Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Giving

Bit’s and Pieces magazine related a story about the American industrialist, Henry Ford, who was once asked to donate money for the construction of a new medical facility.

The billionaire pledged to donate $5,000. The next day the newspaper headline read, “Henry Ford contributes $50,000 to the local hospital.”

The irate Ford was on the phone immediately to complain to the fund-raiser that he had been misunderstood. The fund-raiser replied they would print a retraction in the paper the following day to read, “Henry Ford reduces his donation by $45,000.” Continue reading →

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Are You Focused on Getting Or Giving?

“I didn’t get anything out of worship today,” is a remark sometimes offered by disappointed church attendees.

These disgruntled “worshipers” soon find themselves relating to anyone who will listen to how awful the sermon was, how the song leader pitched the songs too high, the distractions by noisy children, and the general lack of inspiration they felt from the service.

Joe McKeever said such remarks are “like dry rot in a congregation…Like a termite infestation in the building…Like an epidemic afflicting the people of the Lord.” Unchecked, they will spread like a deadly virus. Continue reading →

A Passage To Ponder: John 7:24

In his book, Uncommon Decency: Christian Civility in an Uncivil World, Richard J. Mouw, relates this account among a gathering of seminary professors.

One professor reported that at his school the most damaging charge one student can lodge against another is that the person is being “judgmental.” He found this pattern very upsetting. “You can’t get a good argument going in class anymore,” he said. “As soon as somebody takes a stand on any important issue, someone else says that the person is being judgmental. And that’s it. End of discussion. Everyone is intimidated!” Continue reading →
