Word of the Week: Submit

Stephen P. Beck relates a time when he was driving down a country road and came to a very narrow bridge. In front of the bridge a sign was posted: YIELD. Seeing no oncoming cars, Beck continued across the bridge to his destination.

On his return, he came to the same one-lane bridge and to his surprise was another YIELD signed posted. Continue reading

True Worship

“Among the greatest privileges afforded to man is the opportunity to worship the Creator–to bow down before him in reverent acknowledgment of Who He is, to thank Him for His goodness, and to offer Him our praise,” wrote Dan Petty in the introduction of the 2005 Florida College Lectures, “True Worship.

“Worship,” Dan wrote, “gives meaning to a life devoted to serving God.” Continue reading

Weekly Recap: October 3-8

Good Morning from Beverly Hills, Florida

We enjoyed a wonderful week with the East Shelby Church in Collierville, TN.  The brethren were engaged, receptive and very hospitable. If they were as edified as Norma Jean and I were, then it was definitely a mutually beneficial week.

Friday’s List To Live By #59

Too often our culture is focused on what they have.  Money. Cars. Homes. Collections. Investments. And Real Estate.

This attitude of having affects and infects Christians when they allow the world’s value system to drive them instead of spiritual values.

In John Mason’s fine little book, Conquering An Enemy Called Average, he suggests 34 things you really need to have  And none of them are material.  Here are 13. Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: James 2:14-26

Steve Shepherd tells the story about a fellow leaving worship service one Sunday morning. The preacher was standing at the door shaking hands (You know that’s his job to shake ‘em in, then shake ‘em out).

Well, the preacher grabbed the guy by the hand and said, “Hey, friend, you need to join the Army of the Lord.”

“I’m already in the Army of the Lord,” the man replied.

“Then, why don’t I see you except at Christmas and Easter?” the preacher inquired. Continue reading

“Your Truth” Or The Truth?

Last week Vice-President, Kamala Harris, stirred some controversy by her response to a student who made an anti-Israel comment.

“Your truth cannot be suppressed,” Harris told the student.

The exchange took place at George Mason University during a Q & A session when one student questioned funding Israel’s “Iron Dome missile defense system, which has been credited with saving countless Israeli lives,” according to multiple news outlets.

The student accused Israel of engaging in ethnic genocide. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Oneness

A Texas preacher, Bob Joyce, tells about a church split that began over an argument at a potluck supper.

The dispute started when one of the sisters brought a congealed salad made from cool whip instead of real whipping cream.

The reminds me of an old story Robert Jackson used to tell about a country church that couldn’t get along. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: September 26-October 1

Good Morning from Beverly Hills, Florida

“Are you still traveling?’ I’m occasionally asked.

The answer is  “Not full-time, but, yes, as we have the opportunity.”

October offers several opportunities and finds us away from home for about 2/3 of the month.  We’re leaving today for Memphis, Tennesse, where I began a meeting tomorrow with the East Shelby Church in Collierville. The theme is “Christianity 101:  Bible Basics for the 21st Century.”  If you’re in driving distance, we’d love to see ya’ Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Back To Basics

Today Norma Jean and I are in the Memphis area where I’m beginning a meeting for the East Shelby Church in Collierville, Tennessee.

The Shepherds have asked me to preach lessons based on Ephesians 4 that speak to the issue of religious unity. We’ve entitled the series: “Christianity 101: Bible Basics for the 21st Century.”

Sometimes it’s good to get back to the basics. To the fundamentals. To the authoritative principles on which our faith is founded.

The story is told that the legendary football coach Vince Lombardi came into the training camp of the Green Bay Packers in the summer of 1961 taking nothing for granted. Continue reading
