Weekly Recap: July 5-10

Good morning!

We’re continuing to enjoy the majestic mountains, the scenic Flathead Lake, and of course, the cooler weather of Montana.

We’re in Polson, where I will preach again this Sunday. The brethren have been very welcoming and we’ve enjoyed our time with them.

We’re continuing to wait and see if the Canadian border reopens July 21st. Continue reading

Where to Turn in Times of Trouble?

Paul Faulkner once told a story about a man who was trying to share his faith in Jesus with a woman who was going through a tough time.

The woman told him that her life was falling apart. Nothing was working. Her daughter had been killed in an accident. Her husband was unfaithful to her. Now, she was about to lose her job.

“When the world crashes in on you…to whom do you turn?” asked the man. Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: 2Timothy 2

“What do you do when you’re not preaching?”

“It must be nice to work only one day a week.”

“I’d like to come and see you this afternoon. Since it’s not Sunday, I assume you’re free.”

“Do you have a job? Or just preach?”

“That was like a really good TED talk about Jesus!” Continue reading

What Is The Purpose Of These Times?

Today, as I write these words, we should be returning to the USA from a trip to Greece and Turkey which followed the travels of the apostles Paul and John.

Then we would drive back across the border to Ontario, Canada, where we should have been since May 14, to begin a meeting at Jordan. Then a VBS at Wellandport. And on to South River for another meeting.

Instead, we’re in Polson, Montana. Looking out at the scenic Mission Mountains and Flathead Lake.

What happened? Continue reading

Word of the Week: Godliness

One Sunday on their way home from worship services, little Suzie turned to her mother and said, “Mommy, the preacher’s sermon this morning confused me.”

“Oh, why is that?” the mother asked.

“Well,” replied Suzie, “He said that God is bigger than we are. Is that true?”

“Yes, Suzie, that’s right.”

“But he also said that God lives in us. Is that true, Mommy?” Continue reading

Liberty

Today’s seed thought is based on some observations made by Charles Spurgeon from Galatians 5:1. “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.”

“This ‘liberty’ makes us free to heaven’s charter—the Bible.”

In the writing style of his day, he offers these wonderful insights “You are a welcome guest at the table of the promises. Scripture is a never-failing treasury filled with boundless stories of grace. It is the bank of heaven; you may draw from it as much as you please…Come in faith and you are welcome to all covenant blessings.” Continue reading

Reflections on America’s Birthday

As the USA prepares to celebrate our 244th birthday, it will be a day unlike any we’ve seen in our generation.

In many, if not most communities, there will be no fireworks or parades due to the COVID-19 pandemic that’s changed everything. Large gatherings are out. Beaches are being closed. And communities having fireworks, are urging people to stay home and watch them from the safety of their own backyard.

In fact, instead of this being an occasion to celebrate what’s right with America, we’re seeing an emphasis on criticizing what’s wrong with our country. Continue reading

Who is a Good Minister?

“He’s a good preacher,” is an often repeated phrase by Christians describing the preacher of their local congregation, or their favorite evangelist.

But what defines a good preacher?

Is it oratorical skills? Is it the ability to hold our attention spellbound? As long as it doesn’t exceed 30 minutes? And in some circles only 20 minutes. Is it his pleasing personality? His social skills? His affable demeanor? His administrative organization? His novel ideas? Continue reading
