Word of the Week: Together

This past week-end is one we will always remember.

Not only was it Mother’s Day, but also the day 47 years ago that Norma Jean went into labor. Kenny was born the next day. So for her gift this year, I arranged for a surprise visit for Kenny’s family to come to Tennessee for a few days. Imagine the look on Norma’s face when our grand kids, Miles and Katherine, knocked at the door with a bouquet of flowers. Continue reading

Happy Mother’s Day

“All that I am, or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother,” once reflected President Abraham Lincoln.

I’m sure Lincoln’s sentiments are the feelings of many of us as we approach a celebration of mother’s day this year.

The two most influential women in my life have been my mother, Mattie Weliever, and my wife, Norma Jean, the mother of our children. My life is better, stronger, and richer because of their profound influence in my ministry. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts:  Be Still

Being still is difficult. We like to be busy. On the go. Tackling projects. Making progress. And doing what we want to do.  How do we learn to apply the Biblical admonition to “be still”?

Word of the Week:  Reasonable

Are you willing to calmly and respectfully listen to reason from someone whose views are different from yours?   Would someone who knows you well describe you as a reasonable person? Or unreasonable?  This post will encourage and challenge you to be reasonable.

“Be Merciful To Me, O God”

Mercy is a defining characteristic of God’s moral character.  What does this mean to us personally?  And how does God’s mercy motivate us to be merciful?

Random Reflections on Writing

This post reflects on a major mile stone for ThePreachersWord.  Post #2300.

National Day of Prayer 2020

Unprecedented times call for unprecedented prayer!  More than ever we need  prayers and  more ‘pray-ers’.  This post encourages us to pray.  And offers suggestions for prayer during this current crisis.

Are You A Warrior?

Our President often refers to courageous  citizens as “warriors.”  This metaphor is not only unpopular politically, but also spiritually.  What does the Bible say about why and how Christians can be “warriors.”  This is must read post for every pastor, preacher and parent.

We’re seeing the light at the end of this dark tunnel.  Continue to stay safe.  Be strong. Stay focused.  And wash your hands.

God bless.

Are You A Warrior?

During our current crisis in dealing with COVID-19, President Trump has often characterized himself as a wartime President in fighting this vicious virus.

He often compliments doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals who are on the front lines combating this “unseen enemy” as “warriors.” The other day in the Oval Office, he described American citizens as “warriors” in fighting this deadly pandemic. Continue reading

National Day of Prayer 2020

“Unprecedented times call for unprecedented prayer! This year’s ‘virtual’ National Day of Prayer observance may have more prayer – and more ‘pray-ers’ than ever before!,” wrote Kathy Branzell, President of the National Day of Prayer Task Force.

I suspect we’ve had unprecedented prayer during the past two months of the COVID-19 crisis. In fact on March 14th, President Trump issued a proclamation for a special day of prayer when he declared a national emergency. Continue reading

“Be Merciful To Me, O God”

A mother once approached Napoleon seeking a pardon for her son. The emperor replied that the young man had committed a certain offense twice and justice demanded death.

“But I don’t ask for justice,” the mother explained. “I plead for mercy.”

“But your son does not deserve mercy,” Napoleon replied Continue reading

Word of the Week: Reasonable

Although COVID-19 restrictions are gradually being lifted in many states and cities, citizens in some places are protesting that their Governors are moving too slow.

Some folks are commenting to media outlets that their Governors or Mayors are being oppressive in their edicts, dictatorial in their demands and unreasonable in their restrictions. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Be Still

Restless. Frustrated. Agitated. Anxious. Unsettled. Uneasy. Upset.

These words describe the feelings of many today who’re eager to return to some sense normalcy after “sheltering in place” for so long. Of course, they also may describe the apprehension of others who feel our government is reopening up too soon. Continue reading
