A Passage To Ponder: Hebrews 1:1-3

Scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer once said “The best way to send an idea is to wrap it up in a person.”

Theologically, that concept is expressed in one word, incarnation, which means “in the flesh.”  That’s Jesus.  The incarnation of God.  He sent His  “idea” to humankind in the person of Jesus.

In one of the most sublime and majestic passages in the Bible, the Hebrew writer exalts the person and work of Jesus in these three glorious verses.   Continue reading

God’s Vision For A Relevant Church

This past Sunday morning Norma Jean and I visited the University church in  Tampa.  This congregation holds a special place in our hearts.  It’s the church we attended when we were dating and first married.

Josh Creel is one of the ministers that serves in a preaching capacity and does a wonderful job.  His sermon title, “God’s Vision For A Relevant Church” captured my attention since my theme for the year is “20/20 Vision: Restoring Our Focus.”

Josh cited a Barna Group survey that asked, “What, if anything, helps Americans grow in their faith?” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Abstinence

If you google the word “abstinence” you will get 18 million hits.  While I didn’t check all of them, a quick perusal shows the word is most often used regarding chastity.  Especially dealing with teenagers refraining from sexual activity.

One link advertised a mug you could give you your teenagers with the word “abstinence.”  The back of the mug offered this definition Continue reading

5 Challenging Characteristics of Love

A few years ago The New Times, an online news source, published the results of this question: “What does love mean?”

It was posed by professionals in human behavior to a group of 4-8 year-olds. Here are some of their answers”

“When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love.” Rebecca – age 8 Continue reading

Are You Ready for a Mayor Pete Presidency?

We’re only two primaries into the 2020 Presidential race, but the field has already narrowed for the Democratic nominee. Elizabeth Warren is struggling. Joe Biden is fading. Bernie Sanders, to the chagrin of the party, is the current front runner. And Pete Buttigieg, the former Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is surging.

Have you noticed how the liberal new media seems to be pushing Mayor Pete, often comparing him to President Barack Obama? Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: Ephesians 6:10-18

On October 9, 1934, King Alexander of Yugoslavia visited France for an official visit.

Before he left his warship, he dressed in the full uniform of a Navy admiral. However, the uniform’s tunic did not fit easily over his bulletproof vest, so he removed the vest. As he was riding through the streets of Marseille, a gunman jumped out of the crowd and fired a shot that pierced the King’s heart. And he died. Continue reading

Spiritual Awareness

“Eyes that look are common. Eyes that see are rare,” wrote J. Oswald Sanders in is classic book Spiritual Leadership.

Sanders further illustrated his point with this Bible example. “The Pharisees looked at Peter and saw only a poor, unlettered fisherman, totally insignificant, not worthy of a second look. Jesus saw Peter and discovered the prophet and preacher, saint and leader of the unique band of men who turned the world upside down.” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Reconciliation

When Elizabeth Barrett married the famous British poet and playwright Robert Browning in 1846 her wealthy parents who disapproved of her marriage were so upset they disowned and disinherited her.

The couple settled far from their homes in Florence, Italy. Elizabeth loved her mother and father and desperately desired to be reconciled with them. For 10 years she wrote eloquent, expressive and loving letters several times a month to her parents with no response. However, one day she received a package from them. Continue reading
