2019 Ministry Report

In June 2018 we stepped away from full time located work and launched this new ministry phase of our lives.

We began with the idea of freeing ourselves from the limitations of working with one local church and combining travel with ministry opportunities. It has been both rewarding and exciting.

Here’s a short review of our travels and preaching opportunities for 2019 Continue reading

2019: The Year in Review

Yesterday morning while I was watching the Today Show, they aired their biggest news stories of 2019.

At some point into the 15-minute montage of video headlines, I soon realized that most of the stories were negative. They highlighted crises. Violence. Natural disasters. Political scandals. Betrayal. Cheating. Sexual infidelity. Child abuse. Death. Disease. Mass shootings. Government stalemate. And of course, the impeachment of President Trump Continue reading

Running on Empty

Howard John Wesley, minister of the Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, recently made news and surprised his congregation with the announcement that he is stepping away from his ministry for a season.

“From January 1 (2020) to April 1. I am walking away from every responsibility I have as pastor,” Wesley announced in his Dec 1st sermon.

“You can’t pour out of an empty cup. It is very dangerous for your pastor to be on empty,” he told congregants. “I need to take care of me…I’m tired… I’m tired in my soul.” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Merry

Next to Christmas, the word “merry” may be the most popular and oft-repeated word during this season of the year.

But, do you ever wonder why we wish people, “Happy Birthday,” but instead say, “Merry Christmas”?

According to tradition the expression “Merry Christmas” was first recorded in 1534 when John Fisher, a Catholic bishop wrote a letter to Thomas Cromwell wishing him a “Merry Christmas.” Continue reading

Reaction to the “Word of the Year”

As we conclude 2019, we are learning about the latest social trends. Pop culture fads. The person of the year. The most googled word. And each dictionary announces their word of the year.

Pursuing Peace

In the early 1980’s, a retired couple was alarmed by the threat of nuclear war so they undertook a serious study of all the inhabited places on the globe. Their goal was to determine where in the world would be the place to be least likely affected by a nuclear war. A place of ultimate security. Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: Revelation 10:8-10

Much we experience in life is bittersweet.

You can’t enjoy the sight of the beautiful rainbow without rain.

Leaving a job you enjoy for another job is often filled with mixed emotions. You leave behind pleasant memories and close relationships for a new challenge and an exciting opportunity Continue reading

Prayer and U.S. Constitution

Alabama sheriff Nick Smith is in trouble. At least with some folks. In their eyes, he’s engaged in an egregious activity that should be censured.

“What has sheriff Smith done” you wonder. “How has he violated his oath of office?”

Recently in the face of two local tragedies, sheriff Smith has asked the community to pray. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Perseverance

Today, December 9th, is one of the hundreds of unusual, wacky, national holidays promoted on special calendars.

Today is “Weary Willie Day.”

This day is named after the sad-sack, down on his luck clown made famous by Emmett Kelly who was born on this day in 1898. Continue reading
