2019 Ministry Report

In June 2018 we stepped away from full time located work and launched this new ministry phase of our lives.

We began with the idea of freeing ourselves from the limitations of working with one local church and combining travel with ministry opportunities. It has been both rewarding and exciting.

Here’s a short review of our travels and preaching opportunities for 2019

We began in January by spending a month working with the Northside church in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where my friend Steve McAllister labors as the local evangelist. This is a small group numbering about 25 on Sunday mornings. Steve needed a short Sabbatical and so we taught the Sunday Bible class on Philippians and preached every Sunday morning. It was a pleasure to be with these fine brethren. And we look forward to returning again in January 2020.

February was a more relaxing month spent in Temple Terrace, Florida, where we attended the Florida College Lectures and had the opportunity to be with our family, and visit friends and brethren we’ve known for years. We did speak once at the Coulter Rd church in Brandon.

The pace picked up in March with a 10 day trip to Costa Rica and preaching both Sundays for the brethren in Alajuela. It was great to make new friends, including their preacher Santiago Soto and his family and enjoy the warm fellowship of these wonderful brethren. When we returned we began our journey Northward with preaching appointments along the way in Goose Creek, South Carolina, Wilmington, North Carolina, and Cosby, Tennessee.

On the way to Iowa in April, we spent the week in Nashville, returning to the Kemper Heights church where our friend Ken Green preaches and held a meeting for them. We’ve been to Kemper many times over the years and it was a pleasure renewing our friendship with these fine folks.

At the end of April through most of May, we worked with the church in Madrid, Iowa, teaching a special class on parenting and preaching every Sunday while working with their young preacher Stefan Richardson. We’re grateful to the Madrid elders for this opportunity and for the congregation’s support and fellowship.

After a quick trip to Florida, to see our family, it was back to Welland, Ontario, Canada for the summer and another busy preaching and teaching schedule. During June, July and through August 19 we either preached or taught classes 37 times for churches in Wellandport, Jordan, South River and West End in Tornado. We love and appreciate the Wellandport brethren where we’re based and the kindness of their preacher Mike Stephens, and his lovely wife Sherry. We are looking forward to returning to Canada in the summer of 2020, Lord willing.

During the summer, we were blessed to travel with Barry Britnell and the Florida College Hutchinson Bell group on a trip to Israel. What an incredible 12 days. I would recommend this trip to all preachers. Just don’t wait as long as I did.

Before returning to Florida, we stopped in New Albany, Indiana, and spoke for the Charlestown Rd church during their special summer series. It was good to spend a little time with their preachers and my friends Roger Shouse and Jason Hardin.

Except for preaching once at the West Citrus Church in Crystal River, we enjoyed some downtime in September being with our kids and grandkids combined with a trip to Philadelphia and New York City.

In October we traveled to Denton, Texas, to preach a meeting for the Eastside church. It was good to be with these brethren again and our friends Bill and Carol Allen. And to see so many friends from the West Main church in Lewisville, where we previously preached. From there it was on to Ozark, Arkansas, to hold a meeting for the Etna church. It was our first time with these brethren. We were received warmly and enjoyed renewing our long-time friendship with Tommy and Carol Thornhill. We concluded the month in the Smoky Mountains and spoke both Sundays for the church in Cosby, Tennesee. It’s always a pleasure to be with them and enjoy the company of their preacher Olie Williamson and his sweet wife Mary.

We’re concluding the year back in Florida to enjoy the holidays with our family. We have enjoyed preaching appointments during these two months at Henderson Blvd in Tampa, Skyview in Pinellas Park, Northeast in Clearwater, and West Citrus in Crystal River.

In addition to these preaching and teaching opportunities, we’ve kept a regular schedule of publishing ThePreachersWord. During the year we’ve published over 270 new posts. For the 8 years we’ve been publishing, ThePreachersWord has archived almost 2200 posts in 170 categories and has been read in over 200 countries and territories around the world. We are humbled and amazed at the encouragement we’ve received and the new readers who continue to follow our little blog.

As you can see, to paraphrase Mark Twain, the reports of my retirement have been greatly exaggerated. We’re thankful for God’s blessings that have allowed for these opportunities. And are grateful to all brethren who have chosen to use us in His ministry. Whatever good that’s accomplished, may God receive the glory.

Although next year’s schedule is still being finalized, it is filling up and we look forward to a busy and profitable 2020, Lord willing.

As is our custom, we’re taking a holiday break. For the rest of December, we will reblog the top 10 posts of 2019 based on reader views.

To all our readers, we wish for you and yours a very Merry Christmas. And a Happy New Year.

God bless.

I truly look forward to your blog each and every day and it has helped me immensely as I continue my studies in the Scriptures. It appears that you are busy indeed … Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling (abounding, busy) in the work of the Lord [always doing your best and doing more than is needed], being continually aware that your labor [even to the point of exhaustion] in the Lord is not futile nor wasted [it is never without purpose].
    (1 Cor. 15:58 AMP)
Wishing you all a blessed and a very Merry Christmas.
    Ps. Mark

    • Thanks for reading ThePreachersWord and for your kind words. I’m glad you’ve found the blog helpful. We were in Alaska two years ago but did not get to visit the church in Wasilla. If and when we come back, we will definitely come by and worship with the brethren there. God bless.
