Today Norma Jean and I are in Chillicothe, Ohio. I’m preaching in a meeting with at the church where my good friend Dan DeGarmo ministers. We’ve been with these fine brethren in the past and it’s a pleasure to return. Continue reading

Kids Say The Funniest Things
Kids say the funniest things. While I can’t vouch for the accuracy of all of these, I can imagine they really could happen.
One dad told about driving with his three young children one warm summer evening when some kids in a controvertible passed them. Suddenly a young woman in the back seat stood up waved. She was stark-naked! As I was reeling from shock and before I could say a word, My 5 year old shouted, “Mom! Look! That lady isn’t wearing a seat belt!” Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! When Failure is Not Fatal
John Maxwell has a neat book entitled “Failing Forward.” The Subtitle is “Turning Mistakes Into Stepping Stones for Success.” The thesis is that we all fail. But some fail backward. And others fail forward. Successful people respond positively to their failures. They learn. Grow. And achieve. Continue reading

Character Counts
As I click the “publish” button to send this post off around the world, Norma Jean and I are on the way to the airport. We’re heading to Ohio. This weekend I’ll be spending time with a group of Christian men in a retreat. We’ll eat. Laugh. Swap stories. Enjoy great fellowship. And we’ll sit around the fire and discuss our theme, “The Character of a Man.” I’m grateful to Dan DeGarmo and Matt Allen for the privilege of leading the devotional periods. Continue reading

The Danger of Doubt
My Franklin Planner has a quote or motivational saying for each day of the week. On this day is a quote by Arthur Golden who said, “A mind troubled by doubt cannot focus on the course to victory.”
We understand the need for faith and confidence when it involves athletic contests. For a team to win, it must believe that it can. For the team to be victorious each player must focus with confidence in their ability to succeed. Continue reading

Devices Designed By The Devil
In a recent post on the mannaman’s blog, Dave Lewis, shares a great story from the movie Patton. George C. Scott plays the controversial and eccentric General George S. Patton. The scene that David describes is early in the war and the movie. Continue reading
WHAT IS WORSHIP?
It denotes activity and action. It is not passive, but active. Worship is something you do, not something that is done to you. The word “worship” is really not defined in the Bible, but it’s described. Continue reading

Bulletin Bloopers!
In addition to this daily I blog, I still write a bulletin for the Hickman Mills church where I preach in Kansas City. Occasionally mistakes and misspelled words will creep in. Ok, maybe more than occasionally! But some of the funniest things are sometimes accidentally written in church bulletins. These have been around for years, but are still some of my favorites. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! The Day the Disciples Deserted Jesus
The Psalmist prophesied it. Jesus predicted it would happen. Within hours. Peter emphatically denied it could ever occur. And so nodded all the disciples in agreement. They would never do that! Do what? Continue reading
