What Guides My Life?

The church where I currently preach, Hickman Mills church of Christ, in Kansas City, MO, recently presented a special series called “Week-End in the Word.” The theme was Bible Answers To Tough Questions. The speaker invited to address these questions was Dan DeGarmo from Chillicothe, Ohio.

The questions included, “Why Bad Things Happen to good people” How should I Respond to Terror?” “Who Am I? And “God, What Do You See in Me?”

In my mind the key question, answered Sunday morning, was “What Guides My Life?” This answer impacts the answers to all other questions. Continue reading →

Is the Bible Outdated and Unreliable?

My recent post on gender identity has elicited a good bit of reaction from readers, especially on facebook. It has been shared hundreds of times. Most have commended the post, but not everyone. One reader expressed her disagreement this way.

A GPS FOR LIFE

“What if you could have a GPS for your life?” asks author and leadership coach Michael Hyatt.

Hyatt then relates a personal story of getting lost one time on a hike in the Colorado Rockies when he “got confused, and took the wrong path down the mountain.”

Fortunately Hyatt had a smart phone that picked up a signal and he was able to find his way back. Continue reading →

Yesterday our post, “Cherry Picking” The Scripture, was in response to a question asked by Stephen, one of our regular readers. Today we continue answering more of his questisons.

Stephen asks, “In trying to understand God’s Will on so many social (not so much individual responsibility) issues, how do you know who’s right and who’s wrong?”

Our questioner further opines, “If we go into a more liberal Church (such as a Methodist), what is taught, practiced, and what people believe is much different than more conservative Churches (such as Southern Baptist or Church of Christ).”

“Differences in opinion have always existed in the Church — isn’t a key question how not to make these differences so divisive as to split Christians apart?” Continue reading →

In his lecture yesterday at Florida College, Jason Hardin told the ancient story of The Blind Men and the Elephant.  It goes something like this.

Each man touches a part of the elephant and draws his own conclusion of what an elephant is like.

The first blind man put out his hand and touched the side of the elephant. “How smooth! An elephant is like a wall.”

The second blind man extended his hand and felt the elephant’s trunk. “How round! An elephant is like a snake.”

Parrot

My good friend, the late R. J. Stevens, loved to tell stories and jokes. This morning I was reminded of him when I came across this one. I heard him tell it several times.

A lady is walking around a pet store enjoying looking at the various animals when she stops to admire a parrot. Suddenly the parrot says, “Braaaaaak, Hey lady, you’re really ugly!”  Continue reading →

“If You’re Gonna Talk About Jesus….”

One Sunday the teacher announced, “Today we are going to talk about Jesus.”

Saved By The Bible!

Rickey Waggoner’s life was saved by the Bible.  Literally!

Waggoner, a Dayton, Ohio, bus driver, was attacked early Monday morning by three teenagers after his bus broke down.  The 49 year-old public transit driver was shot in the leg, stabbed in the arm, and shot twice at point-blank range in chest.  Continue reading →
