Great Verses of the Bible: Colossians 3:15

In his book, 10 Natural Laws of Time and Life Management, Hyrum W. Smith relates an exchange during a break with one of his seminar attendees.

“You know, Hyrum, the stuff you’re teaching comes right out of the Bible.”

Smith thought at first the man might be offended. Upon discovering that he wasn’t Smith volunteered to share his personal convictions. Continue reading

The Preeminence of Jesus Christ

Over 2,000 people, including family, friends, dignitaries, and common folks were assembled under one big tent in celebration of the life of evangelist Billy Graham.

What the people repeatedly heard in the 90-minute service was the name of Jesus. Not 15 seconds into the ceremony Jesus was mentioned. And before it was concluded Christ was referred to almost 100 times. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Becoming

Many years ago I attended a seminar by the late motivational speaker Charlie Tremendous Jones. He was engaging. Inspiring. And funny. Very funny.

Jones’ mission in life was to help people improve. To develop their potential. And to become the best version of themselves.

Jones had a line that he always used in his seminars that I’ve never forgotten. “You will be the same person in five years as you are today, except for the people you meet and the books you read.” Continue reading

Do You Know What Today Is?

Did you know that today is National Banana Cream Pie Day?

According to the most comprehensive list of unusual special days, there are 2,346 such National Days and Observances. That’s pretty good for only 365 days a year.

So today is also National Speech and Debate Education Day. National Employee Appreciation Day. National Dress in Blue Day. National Old Stuff Day.

Do you know what else today is? Continue reading

Faith that Overcomes the World

Faith has become the object of ridicule in America today. Particularly Christianity.

Our Vice President, Mike Pence, has been mocked for his faith on numerous occasions. In the wake of the recent school shooting those who have offered prayers for the hurting have been received with sarcasm, scorn, and satire in some quarters. Various talk shows and their hosts have spewed anti-Christian bigotry without any repercussions from the networks Continue reading

Great Verses Of The Bible: Philippians 2:12

The doctrine of “faith only is a most wholesome doctrine and very full of comfort.” This a quote from the Articles of an American denominational creed book.

For centuries there has been a debate about the role of faith and works regarding one’s salvation. Another popular phrase is that salvation is “through faith alone by grace alone.”

What does the Bible say? Continue reading

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Yesterday I began a task that I’ve been putting off–cleaning out the closet in my home office. There are lots of boxes, some unmarked, and others simply labeled “memorabilia.”

As I began to sift through souvenirs of trips, family mementos, pictures and some plain junk, I came across cards. Stacks and stacks of cards. There were birthday cards. Anniversary cards. Valentine’s day cards. Get well cards. Sympathy cards. Thinking of you cards. And thank you cards. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Accord

In his book “Seeing Life: Finding God,” James L. Merrell, tells the story of a small, rural Tennessee church, from the 19th century that got into a fierce squabble which resulted in division.

The 100 member church was split right down the middle. There was no resolution. Neither side had the resources to build or buy its own building so they agreed to use the same building but meet at different times. However, they had a separate treasury to pay their own bills. They even had separate piles of coal to fuel the pot belly furnace to heat the building in the winter. Continue reading

Changing Hearts. Changing Lives.

In a facebook post yesterday my friend and preaching colleague, Doy Moyer opined that “Changing hearts is greater than changing laws, for when hearts are changed for the good, the laws won’t even be necessary.”

In the aftermath of continued gun violence in general and another school shooting in particular, cries are coming to “do something!” There is pressure on lawmakers to pass more gun laws to “keep this from ever happening again.” Continue reading

A Striking Paradox

Yesterday’s news was dominated by two major stories: What we can do to stop school shootings like the one in Parkland, Florida, last week and the death of evangelist Billy Graham.

Oh, there was NBC’s coverage of the winter Olympics, but even that network had considerable national and local coverage regarding the other two major events.

In watching and listening at various intervals throughout the day it occurred to me there was quite a striking paradox taking place. Continue reading
