Why is Evil Rampant in our Country?

We continue our countdown of the 10 ten posts of 2019, with this August post that ranked #6 according to WordPress. It raises a question worthy of our consideration as we come to an end of 2019 and stand on the brink of a new year and a new decade–“Have I forgotten God?”

Following the horrific mass murders in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, politicians and pundits are asking the same questions, promoting familiar explanations, and making urgent demands that we’ve all heard before.

“One question no one is asking,” raised columnist Cal Thomas is “Why is evil rampant in our country?”

The Deconversion of Christians

This October post was the 7th most read 2019 post. Plus received many responses. Feel free to add your thoughts regarding this issue. I would love to get your opinion. We will resume our countdown on the 26th.

Do you ever miss being a Christian?”

“No,” replied Anthony B. Pinn comfortably.

In an online story by The ChristianPost, Leonardo Blair relates the deconversion of a professor of humanities and religion at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

Deconversion is a strange-sounding new word to Christians. We’re familiar with conversion. But deconversion? It’s defined as a loss of faith or leaving one’s religion for another religion, or no religion at all.

A State of Emergency

While we’re enjoying a holiday blogging break, we’re reblogging the top 10 posts of 2019 according to reader views. This one ranked #8.

ThePreachersWord's avatarThePreachersWord

President Trump has declared “A State of Emergency” on our Southern border in an effort to secure funding to build his promised border wall.

This declaration has further polarized Republicans and Democrats. Conservatives and Liberals. Pro-Trump and Non-Trump advocates. Of course, the media is having a field day with political pundits in their respective corners pontificating about the merits of this declaration or the lack thereof.

Predictably, many on social media are passionately sharing their views. Some with harsh and hateful language. Sadly some who profess allegiance to Christ have dimmed and diminished their light with vitriolic speech.

Abortion Actually Is…

We’re taking a blogging break during the final two weeks of the year and posting the top 10 posts of 2019 based on reader views. This November post ranked #9.

You see some things on Facebook that make you wince. Others cause you to shake your head in disbelief. And some elicit a chuckle. This one makes me sick.

A pro-choice organization, which means pro-abortion, recently mounted a new campaign claiming that abortion is a selfless act of love.

The National Women’s Law Center is seeking to “reframe” the abortion debate with their campaign “Abortion Actually.” According to their website they intend to “fight back against the assault on abortion rights in our country.”

Holy Sex and Unholy Sex

As we close 2019, we’re counting down our top 10 posts for the year based on reader views. It’s an opportunity not only to take a blogging break but to review for our readers their favorite posts and give our new readers the chance to see posts they may have missed. This June post came in at #10.

“Why is sex before marriage a sin?” asked Linda, one of our regular readers in response to a recent post.

Linda added, “I can see how extramarital affairs, sex outside marriage can be (sinful).” She further suggested the only dangers to sex before marriage might be “unwanted sexual diseases or an unexpected or unplanned pregnancy.” However, she opined that “thankfully these days many people have access to safe birth control and condoms so they do not have to suffer heart-wrenching punishing consequences.”

We began with the idea of freeing ourselves from the limitations of working with one local church and combining travel with ministry opportunities. It has been both rewarding and exciting.

Here’s a short review of our travels and preaching opportunities for 2019 Continue reading

2019: The Year in Review

Yesterday morning while I was watching the Today Show, they aired their biggest news stories of 2019.

At some point into the 15-minute montage of video headlines, I soon realized that most of the stories were negative. They highlighted crises. Violence. Natural disasters. Political scandals. Betrayal. Cheating. Sexual infidelity. Child abuse. Death. Disease. Mass shootings. Government stalemate. And of course, the impeachment of President Trump Continue reading

Running on Empty

Howard John Wesley, minister of the Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, recently made news and surprised his congregation with the announcement that he is stepping away from his ministry for a season.

“From January 1 (2020) to April 1. I am walking away from every responsibility I have as pastor,” Wesley announced in his Dec 1st sermon.

“You can’t pour out of an empty cup. It is very dangerous for your pastor to be on empty,” he told congregants. “I need to take care of me…I’m tired… I’m tired in my soul.” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Merry

Next to Christmas, the word “merry” may be the most popular and oft-repeated word during this season of the year.

But, do you ever wonder why we wish people, “Happy Birthday,” but instead say, “Merry Christmas”?

According to tradition the expression “Merry Christmas” was first recorded in 1534 when John Fisher, a Catholic bishop wrote a letter to Thomas Cromwell wishing him a “Merry Christmas.” Continue reading
