How To Feel Peace When Plagued with Problems?

During these chaotic, uncertain and unprecedented times many people are feeling distressed, disquieted, and disturbed.

However, the absence of a peaceful, calm and tranquil spirit is not all due to the current crisis of the coronavirus. For many this predicament only added more pressure to many other pressing problems.

If people of faith who’ve enjoyed a relatively good life are experiencing some feelings of anxiety, apprehension or even alarm, what do you think people who were already dealing with financial problems, relationship conflicts, or depression are feeling? Is it Wrong for Churches to Cancel Services?

This question raised today reminds me of the old joke about the politician who was asked by a reporter his position on a particular issue.

“Well, there are two ways to look at it,” he responded. Then launched into a lengthy explanation of both views, giving both the pros and cons of the respective positions. He concluded by saying he had friends on both sides of the question.

Word of the Week: Prudence

When George H.W. Bush was President, comedian Dana Carvey made a living by imitating Bush on Saturday Night Live. As he spoofed the President, Carvey made popular the phrase: “Wouldn’t be prudent!”

While the President could have become irritated and resentful of Carvey, Bush demonstrated prudence by inviting Carvey and his wife to the White House. Apparently the two became good friends and dispelled any rumors that Bush held a grudge against Carvey. Continue reading →

Making Plans

“If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans,” is an old aphorism often attributed to Woody Allen. But’s it probably older than Allen. Its origins may be from an old Yiddish proverb.

This morning as we’re preparing to check-out of the house we’re renting in Temple Terrace, I recalled when we arrived we were going to attend the Florida College Lectures. A Passage To Ponder: Luke 4:1-13

John Piper once wrote that sin (lust for example) “gets its power by persuading me to believe that I will be more happy if I follow it. The power of all temptation is the prospect that it will make me happier.”

Ancient Advice For Our Current Crisis

Joe went to a psychiatrist for a problem that had plagued him for years– fear that someone was under his bed at night.

“Doc,” he pleaded, “You’ve got to help me. I’m going crazy. I can’t get a good night’s sleep.”

“I can cure you in 6 months,” said the doctor. “If you will come 3 times a week, I will rid you of your fears.”
