Word of the Week: Commitment

The Scottish minister, David Livingstone was one of the most popular national heroes of 19th century Britain. He was known as an explorer. Scientific investigator. Anti-slavery crusader. And Protestant missionary martyr.

The story is told that Livingstone once received a letter from the London Missionary Society inquiring about his work in Africa. They asked the explorer, “Have you found a good road to where you are? If so, we want to know how to send other men to join you? Continue reading

Faces in Eternity

On one of our trips to the Smoky Mountains after preaching for the Cosby Church, we enjoyed a wonderful visit with our good friends, Olie and Mary Williamson.

We when we were ready to leave, with her eyes welling up with tears, Mary gave us a gift and said, “I want you to listen to this as you travel.” It was a CD by the southern gospel Quartet, Greater Vision. The other day I listened again to its powerful and emotional message.  And immediately knew I wanted to share its lyrics with our readers. Continue reading

Things Are Not Always as They Appear

Louisianan Bob Oren Bass claims this is a true story.

A woman was flying from Seattle to San Francisco. Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Sacramento along the way.. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft the plane would re-board in 50 minutes.

Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind. The man had noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her Seeing Eye dog, Buddy, lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight. Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: Philippians 2:1-8

Warren Wiersbe relates a story about a reporter who was interviewing a successful job counselor. He had helped hundreds of workers find happiness and fulfillment in their vocations. When asked the secret of his success the man offered this insight.

“If you want to find out what a worker is really like, don’t give him responsibilities give him privileges. Most people can handle responsibilities if you pay them enough, but it takes a real leader to handle privileges. A leader will use his privileges to help others and build the organization; a lesser man will use privileges to promote himself.” Continue reading

No Excuse Zone

In his book, Something Else to Smile About, Zig Ziglar tells a story about man who went next door to borrow his neighbor’s lawnmower.

The neighbor explained that he couldn’t loan him the mower because all the flights had been canceled from New York to Los Angeles.

“What do canceled flights from New York to Los Angeles have to do with borrowing your lawnmower?” the man incredulously asked. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Attitude

There’s an exercise, which I borrowed from John Maxwell, that I’ve used through the years in Bible classes. In fact, why don’t you try it right now?

Write down the name of a friend who you greatly admire.

Now write down one thing you admire most about your friend.

The Lord’s Day

There’s an old story about two men who were fishing one Sunday morning and when the fish weren’t biting they began to feel guilty about skipping church.

One man said, “I guess I should have gone to church rather than gone fishing.”

The other man replied, “Well, I couldn’t have gone to church anyway, because my wife is home sick in bed.” Continue reading
