Word of the Week: Legacy

Legacy. Tree

Sixteen year old Hannah was nervous as she took the wheel for her first driving lesson. As she was pulling out of the parking lot, the instructor said, “Turn left here.” Then quickly added, “Oh, and don’t forget to let the people behind you know what you are doing.”

Immediately Hannah turned to the students sitting in the backseat and announced, “I’m turning left.”

Although Hannah misunderstood the teacher’s instructions, his advice is good not just for driving, but for life. “Let the people behind you know what you are doing.” Continue reading →

Purge

The word around our house for the past several weeks has been ‘PURGE!”

Word of the Week: Commandments

Commandments“Life is a lot like a minefield,” wrote my favorite author anonymous.

What Mr. Anon meant is that minefields are incredibly dangerous places. Of course, the danger lurks in not knowing where the mines are planted. However, if a soldier had a detailed map of a minefield showing where a mine is located, the infantry could walk through unscathed.

I understand the military has specialists whose job is to locate these mines. Using high-tech methods, they locate the mines and plant a small flag by them. When the troops march through the area they know where to step and more importantly where not to step! Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Called

 Called by God

There’s an old story about a young farmer down in the Bootheel of Missouri who’s plowing his field one Spring. He’s kinda discouraged with farming. He tried growing cotton and didn’t do very well. Soy beans weren’t any better. And rice was a total failure.

He’s wondering what he ought to do with the rest of his life. As he steers his tractor up one row and down another, he utters a fervent prayer to God: “Lord, if you have a plan for my life, please send me a sign, and I will obey.” Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Control

Control.Emotions 

The past two weeks have been a sports paradise for the basketball junkie. The annual NCAA men’s college basketball tournament, known as March Madness, has provided upsets, incredible comebacks, and thrilling, last second shots.

The story is told that George Shultz, while Secretary of State during the Reagan presidency, kept a large globe in his office.

When newly appointed ambassadors had an interview with him Shultz would test them by saying, “You have to go over to the globe and prove to me that you can identify your country.” Continue reading →

Psalm 15 

“You’re welcome to come to our house. We would love to have you stay with us,” began Bob Owen in his lecture last Tuesday morning at the Florida College Lectures.

Word of the Week: Gentleness

Gentleness

J. Upton Dickson, who brands himself as a Christian humorist, joked after writing a pamphlet called “Cower Power,” that he was thinking about founding a society called D.O.O.R.M.A.T.S.

It is an acronym for “Dependent Order of Really Meek and Timid Souls.” Their logo would be a yellow caution light. And their motto would be “The meek shall inherit the earth…if that’s okay with everybody.” Of course, Upton quipped, the society didn’t last very long when someone objected! Continue reading →
