For Goodness’ Sake or God’s Sake?

SKIP CHURCH. GOODNESS

American Atheists are at it again this Christmas season. As part of their annual tradition the past few years, the Atheists organization has raised eyebrows with their latest holiday-theme billboard.

Picturing a smiling Santa, promising not to tell on you, the message reads: “Go ahead and skip church! Just be good for goodness sake. Happy Holidays!” So far, these billboards have popped up in Colorado, Springs, CO and Raleigh, NC.

“We want people to know that going to church has absolutely nothing to do with being a good person,” said David Silverman, president of American Atheists, in a statement. “The things that are most important during the holiday season—spending time with loved ones, charity and being merry—have nothing to do with religion.” Continue reading

Young couple sitting in cafe on summer day and looking at camera

“The headline caught my eye: “Is it OK to live together before marriage’”, wrote Rubel Shelly in a recent Fax of Life.

Shelly said he knew what the answer would be before he read it. So did I! The internet is filled with blogs with titles like “5 Reasons you shouldn’t say ‘I Do’ Before Living Together First.” Continue reading

Are The Duggars Hypocrites?

Jim Bob Michelle Duggar

Last week I posted this question: “Does Sin Negate the Christian Faith?”

It was in response to the considerable media coverage about the family of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and the revelation that their son, Josh, was guilty of “inappropriate touching” about 12 years ago.

My post was very clear that I was not condoning Josh Duggar’s sinful behavior when he was a teenager. Neither was I attempting to pass judgment on the response of the Duggars, nor to defend them. . My post had one fundamental point: Sin in the life of a Believer does not invalidate the Bible teaching on morality, nullify the Truth, or negate the Christian Faith. Continue reading

Win or Lose, Let’s Get Rowdy!

BurningStopSign

It was predictable. In fact, police were prepared in both Lexington, KY and Storrs, CT.

Following Monday night’s NCAA championship basketball game, thousands of disappointed Cat fans spilled out into the streets, lighting fires, burning player jerseys and spewing out profanities. Lexington police were dispatched and used tear gas to control rowdy fans following the UK loss to UConn. Continue reading

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Phil Everly. Music. And Marriage.

Phil Everly, left, and brother Don perform on ITV's Saturday Spectacular in 1960.

Throwback Thursday is a weekly theme by social media users to post past photos of themselves.  In that spirit I’m posting a 1960 picture of the Everly Brothers.  Phil is on the left and his brother Don is on the right.  I hadn’t thought about them in a long time, until I recently learned that Phil passed away.    Continue reading

What’s the World Coming To?

NewsRecent news headlines are pretty depressing.

“No Pants Subway Day” Yes, it is what it sounds like!  In 60 cities across the world people rode the subway sans their pants.  Acting as if everything was normal people waited, boarded and rode the subway in their boxers, briefs and panties.  The twelfth annual event is said to have attracted over 4,000 participants in New York City.

As we shake our collective heads in utter disbelief and disgust, there is more…. Continue reading

Was Phil Robertson Guilty of Judging?

Phil.Robertson

During my self-imposed holiday hiatus ThePreachersWord missed out on the whole Duck Dynasty flap!

While I was away, Duck Commander, Phil Robertson, was put on suspension by the A & E network for his comments in GQ magazine regarding homosexuality.  Every news show, talk show, cable TV host, call in radio show and about anyone involved in media opined on Robertson.   Duck Dynasty.  Free speech.  Freedom of religion.  And homosexuality.   Continue reading
