The Baby Changed Everything

Jesus.Birth

“The Luck of Roaring Camp” is a piece of American fiction from 19th century author Bret Harte.

Maybe you’re familiar with the story, but I’d never heard of it. I had it filed under “future blogs.” Evidently a preacher, Bruce Thielemann, had used it in a sermon several years ago.

Roaring Camp was portrayed as the coarsest, meanest, toughest mining town in the Wild West of 1805. It was a terrible place where theft and murder were commonplace, inhabited entirely by men – and one “coarse, very sinful woman” named Cherokee Sal. Continue reading

A GPS FOR LIFE

GPS.Jesus

“What if you could have a GPS for your life?” asks author and leadership coach Michael Hyatt.

Hyatt then relates a personal story of getting lost one time on a hike in the Colorado Rockies when he “got confused, and took the wrong path down the mountain.”

Fortunately Hyatt had a smart phone that picked up a signal and he was able to find his way back. Continue reading

“If You’re Gonna Talk About Jesus….”

jesus-bibleSeveral years ago I heard a true story that a grandfather told about his precocious, 4 year old  grandson, Conner, who loved going to Bible class at church.

One Sunday the teacher announced, “Today we are going to talk about Jesus.”

Immediately little Conner stood up, thrust his hands onto his hips, looked at the teacher and authoritatively replied, Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE Acts 4:12

Jesus.Names

Chris, a fellow blogger, from Arizona, asked me to write on Acts 4:12.

“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! The Absurdity Of It All

Jesus.Collage

“You mean to tell me God became a baby and He was born in a stable?”

This question was asked by a young man following one of Landon Saunders lectures.  It was obvious this man wasn’t being cynical, or seeking attention.  He just had to understand. So he half asked and half stated what Saunders had been explaining. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Jesus

Jesus.Names

Do you remember when churches used to have kids come up front before worship began to sing and have a short devotional?

I heard about one preacher who was going to teach the children about industry and preparation by using squirrels as an object lesson.  He began by saying,  “I’m going to describe something, and I want you to raise your hand when you know what it is.  OK?”  The children grinned.  Nodded.  And waited with anticipation. Continue reading

Did Jesus of Nazareth Really Live?

Jesus.Messiah

I have just finished reading Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard’s book Killing Jesus.

O’Reilly has taken some heat for not affirming that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God.  While there are numerous references to Jesus as the Christ from  prophetic references, the preaching of John the Baptist, and the statements of Jesus himself, that was not the purpose of the book.   Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Jesus: A Dangerous Man

Jesus.DangerousManThe most dangerous idea in human history and philosophy remains the belief that Jesus Christ was the Son of God and rose from the dead. And that is the most dangerous idea you will ever encounter.”

These words were those spoken by Peter Hitchens, who served on a panel for the Australian TV show “Q&A, Adventures in Democracy,” which was broadcast from the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on Monday, November 4, 2013.  Other panelists included feminist Germaine Greer, writer Hanna Rosin and homosexual activist, Dan Savage. Who Are You Listening To?

Listening2

Billie Burke was a famous actress of the early 20th century.  She played “Gilda the good witch” in the Wizard of Oz musical.  The story is told that Ms Burke was once traveling on a cruise ship when she noticed a man at the next table suffering from a bad cold.

She asked, “Are you uncomfortable?”  The man nodded in the affirmative.  “Well,” she instructed, “I’ll tell you what to do. Continue reading

Some Thoughts About the Royal Baby

mother-holding-baby-drawingWhen a King is about to be born people are watching.  Waiting.  Anticipating.

After all it’s not a common occurrence.  Or an every day event.  Or an ordinary birth.  It’s unique.  Unparalleled.  Unequaled.  Special.  Very special.

And now the Royal baby has come into the world!  Adored.  Admired. Celebrated.

And don’t you just love his name?  It flows.  It just rolls off your tongue. Continue reading
