“Give me liberty or give me death!”
Patrick Henry is well known for these fiery words. He was elected to the House of Burgesses in 1774 and a delegate to the First Continental Congress. He became a champion of freedom for the frontier people. On March 20, 1775, Patrick Henry appeared before the Virginia Provincial Convention, which was deeply divided between those who supported England and those who desired freedom. It was then he closed his speech with this passionate and stirring challenge: “I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!” Continue reading

“On the day after Jesus’ death, it looked as if whatever small mark he left on the world would rapidly disappear. Instead, his impact on human history has been unparalleled.”
These are the opening words by John Ortberg in his book “Who is this Man?” This was a father’s day present from my daughter and son-in-law. It’s going to be a good one! Continue reading

A husband and wife were on the way home from worship one Sunday morning. As they rode along, the wife asked her husband, “Did you see that woman in the front row showing off her Liz Claiborne suit?”
He said, “No.”
Well, “Did you see that man on our left–the one wearing that gaudy sport jacket that clashed with his slacks?”
“No, I didn’t” her husband replied. Continue reading

Auguste Bartholdi was discouraged. Ten years of his life. Wasted!
The year was 1856. Barthold had traveled to Egypt and was captivated by the magnificence of the pyramids. The magical Nile. And the mysterious Sphinx. There he met Ferdinand de Lesseps who began a ten-year project of cutting a canal from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. He succeeded. And the Suez Canal began a reality.
Bartholdi was inspired to design a grand lighthouse to adorn the entrance of the canal. His ten years of work, planning and designing did not produce the same results. No one was interested in financing the statue. Continue reading

“You mean to tell me God became a baby and He was born in a stable?”
This question was asked by a young man following one of Landon Saunders lectures. It was obvious this man wasn’t being cynical, or seeking attention. He just had to understand. So he half asked and half stated what Saunders had been explaining. Continue reading

Today finds Norma Jean and me in the Washington, D. C. area with Phil and Lori Mullins. It is combination vacation and meeting trip. I will be speaking for the Dulles church on the topic of leadership over the week-end.
Next week we hope to see some of the time-honored memorials in the area. The newly remodeled and reopened Washington Monument. The Lincoln memorial. The Jefferson Memorial. Arlington. One day we may drive to Gettysburg and see the battlefield memorials in the National cemetery. Continue reading

“A wonderful savior is Jesus my Lord, a wonderful savior to me” begins the hymn by the famous song writer Fanny Crosby. Yet the circumstances of Crosby’s life were anything but wonderful.
Three tragic events impacted Fanny Crosby that could have rendered her discouraged, depressed and impotent to accomplish success in her life. Continue reading

During the Communion service, to help fix my mind on Jesus, I like to read the accounts of Christ’s crucifixion.
One Sunday I was reading John’s account and came upon a verse I hadn’t noticed before. I was stunned. Shocked. Startled. Continue reading

Surrender is a bad word today.
Surrender means losing. Quitting. Failing. It evokes images of a soldier “raising the white flag.” Of a boxer” throwing in the towel.” Or a wrestler “Tapping out.”
Surrender is negative. It is yielding to an opponent. Admitting defeat. Or forfeiting the contest. Continue reading
