Patrick Henry is well known for these fiery words. He was elected to the House of Burgesses in 1774 and a delegate to the First Continental Congress. He became a champion of freedom for the frontier people. On March 20, 1775, Patrick Henry appeared before the Virginia Provincial Convention, which was deeply divided between those who supported England and those who desired freedom. Auguste Bartholdi was discouraged. Ten years of his life. Wasted!
The year was 1856. Barthold had traveled to Egypt and was captivated by the magnificence of the pyramids. The magical Nile. And the mysterious Sphinx. There he met Ferdinand de Lesseps who began a ten-year project of cutting a canal from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. He succeeded. And the Suez Canal began a reality.
Bartholdi was inspired to design a grand lighthouse to adorn the entrance of the canal. His ten years of work, planning and designing did not produce the same results. No one was interested in financing the statue. Continue reading

Today finds Norma Jean and me in the Washington, D. C. area with Phil and Lori Mullins. It is combination vacation and meeting trip. I will be speaking for the Dulles church on the topic of leadership over the week-end.
Next week we hope to see some of the time-honored memorials in the area. The newly remodeled and reopened Washington Monument. The Lincoln memorial. The Jefferson Memorial. Arlington. One day we may drive to Gettysburg and see the battlefield memorials in the National cemetery. Continue reading

Surrender means losing. Quitting. Failing. It evokes images of a soldier “raising the white flag.” Of a boxer” throwing in the towel.” Or a wrestler “Tapping out.”
