Great Verses of the Bible: 1Timothy 2:1-2

In two days Donald J. Trump will take the oath of office as the 45th President of the United States. Unless you’re on a total news blackout, you know that this inauguration is being met with protests, demonstrations, and out right defiance in many quarters.

Mr. Trump is entering the Presidency with the lowest approval rating of any President in modern history. At least, that’s what the polls state . To say that his election has been unprecedented and controversial is an understatement. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Philippians 4:19

Melvin Newland, an Oklahoma minister, tells about a preacher friend of his who decided to keep track of all the questions he was asked and all the requests people made of him and the church for one week.

“When people stopped by to see him, what did they want? When people called him on the phone, what was on their mind? What was bothering them? What did the people really want?” Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Luke 13:18-19

mustard-treeIt was on January 1, 2012, that ThePreachersWord entered the world of blogging with our first post. Now 5 years and 4 days later we are writing and publishing post #1400.

It was a small and obscure beginning. With no readers, no advance notice, no advertising and no professional platform we launched in faith that someone would notice. And hopefully read our little blog and recommend it to a friend. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Philippians 2:5

AttitudeJesus

Norman Vincent Peale relates this story from his book, Power of the Plus Factor:

”Once walking through the twisted little streets of Kowloon in Hong Kong, I came upon a tattoo studio. In the window were displayed samples of the tattoos available.”

“On the chest or arms you could have tattooed an anchor or flag or mermaid or whatever. But what struck me with force were three words that could be tattooed on one’s flesh, ‘Born to Lose’.”

“I entered the shop in astonishment and, pointing to those words, asked the Chinese tattoo artist, “Does anyone really have that terrible phrase, Born to Lose, tattooed on his body?” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 1Thessalonians 1:3

Several years ago an Afghanistan man, Abud Rahman was arrested for the “crime” of converting to Christianity from Islam. As a result, Raham faced the possibility of the death penalty.

Following outrage by the world community, the citizens of the United States and the plea of then President Bush George W. Bush, the Afghan officials decided to drop the charges of apostasy and release the man. Their decision was based on two reasons. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 100

psalm100

Lisa Earby, a Cleveland, Tennessee, teacher relates a funny story about reading one-on-one with a first grader.

For the first time the student discovered the words “thank you” in print. Lisa hoped her pupil would use some of the reading strategies she’d learned to figure out the words. However, after a few moments, Lisa decided to tell her the word “thank.” When she didn’t respond, Lisa emphatically said, “Thank.” Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: 1Corinthians 10:13

marshmallowtest-2

“I’m the marshmallow man,” quipped Columbia University Professor Walter Mischel. Over the past 50 years his “Marshmallow Test” has become synonymous with the concepts of self-control, temptation, and delayed gratification.

The test is simple. A child is given a single marshmallow and this choice: Eat this one now. Or wait for 15 minutes and you can eat two! As you can imagine the results are a bit comical as kids twist and turn trying to control themselves from eating! Continue reading

Great Verses Of The Bible: Psalm 47:8

ps47-8

“Are you staying up?” my wife, Norma Jean asked, as she left the family room heading to the bedroom.

“I’m going to give it until 10:30,” I replied. “If there’s not a winner. I’m coming to bed. I can find out who won in the morning.”

And so I awake, along with many surprised Americans, to learn that billionaire real estate mogul Donald Trump is now President-elect of the United States of America.

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Psalm 34:19

 sorrow-crying

“And they lived happily ever after.”

We recognize the above phrase as the epitome of a fairy tale’s standard ending. Or the predictable plot line in a romantic Hallmark movie. Yet, we instinctively know that not everything in this life is fair. Equitable. Just. And certainly not filled with happiness.

Life is filled with dangers, disappointments and discouragements. We experience hurt, heartache and unhappiness. Sooner or later we all must deal with physical ailments, emotional stress and even the grief caused by death. Continue reading
