The Danger of Waiting Until Later

“My advice is, never do tomorrow what you can today. Procrastination is the thief of time,” wrote Charles Dickens’ in his novel David Copperfield.

Also, as my favorite author anonymous once opined, “Procrastination is the grave in which opportunity is buried.” Continue reading

Counting the Cost

My preaching colleague and fellow Hoosier, Max Dawson, posted a piece on facebook a few months ago from his column “Pontiacs, Points, and Proverbs.”

Max is a “car guy” and loves to share various stories about cars and use them as a springboard to make a spiritual application. This one teaches a lesson that parallels one of Jesus’ parables. Continue reading

Values. Honor. And Integrity.

The Secret of Soul facebook page recently posted this story about a Kenyan runner Abel Mutai who was competing in a cross-country race in Burlada, Navarre, Spain, in 2012.

Mutai was just a few feet from the finish line, but became confused with the signage and stopped, thinking he had completed the race. Continue reading

Honor All People

Recently my facebook friend and preaching colleague Adam Shanks posted a piece about honor that caught my eye.

“The world has decided to erase shame by erasing honor: giving awards for participation instead of achievement, heaping praise on those who are unable to control their urges, applauding the irreverent, and lifting up the dishonorable.” Continue reading

How To Defeat Sin and Satan

“Sin is fun, until it isn’t,” recently wrote my facebook friend and preaching colleague Wilson Adams.

Take a minute to read this thought provoking post by Wilson that provides a fresh reminder of sin’s seriousness. And maybe offer a new perspective. Continue reading

The Blessing of Being an “Ordinary Guy” Instead of the World’s Greatest General

Melody Hammer Biddle shared this story on Edwin Crozier’s facebook page credited to Mark Twain.

I’ve never heard this story before, but apparently it has been repeated in multiple books.

A man died and met Saint Peter at the gates of heaven. Knowing that Peter was very wise, he asked a question that he had wondered about his whole life. Continue reading

Coffee. Concerts. And Church.

“I believe it is unbiblical to elevate entertainment over preaching and to put public relations ahead of worship in our church services,” wrote John MacArthur in his book “Ashamed of the Gospel” and subtitled “When the Church Becomes Like the World.”

MacArthur’s book was orbitally published in 1993 and has been updated twice. He further warns against fleshly enticements, secular methods, and watering down the gospel to draw crowds. Current trends show little change as churches head farther in that direction. Continue reading
