Post Election Thoughts

With a few exceptions, I have been generally pleased with most posts that have come across my facebook feed this week following the election. Most have been respectful.

Moving forward, here are a few thoughts that we need to embrace now and in the coming days and weeks.

Next week ThePreachersWord will move on to other issues. But for now… Continue reading

It’s a story with a great lesson.  I hope you like it.

What Can Wash Away My Sin?

Robert Lowry was an 19th century hymnist who wrote a song that is still popular and sung today in churches. It was based on the question “What can wash away my sin?”

Lowry doesn’t leave us in doubt as he answers the question in the first stanza of the hymn. Continue reading

Love and the Little Things

On the facebook page entitled “Very Interesting” is this post by an unknown and obviously female writer. Apparently it’s been shared almost 3,000 times and has received over a 1,000 comments, mostly positive.

It offers a practical perspective of love in action in a marriage. Not some Hallmark fantasy. Continue reading

Cancel Culture

Rory Feek is a country music singer-song writer from Columbia, Tennessee. He’s also a blogger, author, and a world-class story teller. He was one-half of the Grammy-award-winning duo, Joey+Rory. Sadly Joey passed away 8 years ago with cervical cancer.

Today post is from Rory’s facebook page where he shared an article he wrote from Plain Values magazine in May 2023. It’s longer than we usually publish, but I believe you will find Rory’s article accurate, edifying, and spiritually challenging. Continue reading

Jesus’ Preaching vs Modern Preachers

I assume most of our readers know the name Sewell Hall.  If you don’t, he’s a 94 year old gospel preacher living in the Atlanta area who has dedicated his life to living for Christ.

Brother Hall is  known as a careful Bible student, a faithful proclaimer of the Word, an excellent song leader, as well as a thought-provoking writer and author.  Among his published works are two of my favorites, The Winter of Life: Redeeming the Time, which encourages those of  us as we’re growing older, and Hallmarks: Lights in the World, true stories about every day Christians who are letting their light shine and making a difference in the world. When Brethren Disappoint Us

Sometime ago my friend, preaching colleague and fellow blogger, Roger Shouse posted some thoughts from a class he taught on “Expectations.”

They are from his blog Jump Starts Daily, which I highly recommend. The best compliment I can give Roger is that he often posts ideas which I wish I had thought of for ThePreachersWord. This one of those posts.

You will profit from this post. Continue reading

How to Overcome Negative Feelings

My facebook friend and sister in Christ, Sherry Stephens from Wainfleet, Ontario, Canada, recently posted something from the Stay Positive facebook page that captured my attention,.

It’s only 24 words. But the thoughts are powerful. Life changing. And better yet, Biblical based. Read them carefully. Slowly. And thoughtfully. Let them sink in. Continue reading

Why I Didn’t Leave the Church

My lesson Wednesday night, “Seen With Blinded Eyes,” based on Matt Bassford’s hymn, Exalted, reminded me of a phrase in Hebrews 11:4

It’s a statement about the ancient antediluvian Abel. “Through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.”

Although Matt has passed from this life, he is still speaking this summer at Charlestown Road through his hymn and the 9 lessons based on it. Continue reading
