3 Lessons From March Madness

We’re nearing the end of my favorite three weeks of the year–March Madness. You probably don’t even have to be a sports fan to know March Madness is the moniker for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

This year has been madnesses personified. This year’s final four are San Diego State. Florida Atlantic University. Miami, And University of Connecticut. Only UConn has been here before.

Like the apostle Paul who often used sports metaphors, there are some good spiritual lessons from this year’s tournament. Continue reading

Notable Quotes for Christian Living

I love the quotes about life and Christian living that I come across on facebook. They’re often positive. Usually encouraging. And sometimes challenging.

Today’s facebook Friday offers a few that we’ve seen recently. I hope you like ‘em.

Someone reminded us “We aren’t called to be like other Christians; we’re called to be like Christ.” Continue reading

Disagreement is Not Hate

Since I’m not a hockey fan, I was unaware until this morning that Canadian goalie James Reimer who plays for the San Jose Sharks had made news over the weekend.

What did he do?

Break the single game record for saves? Stop the New York Islanders from scoring a last second goal winning shot? Start a fight and get ejected from the game? Continue reading

Cancel Spring Break?

That’s what the Mayor of Miami, Florida wants to do–cancel Spring break.

The Mayor called for a ban after a violent weekend that ended with two fatal shootings and “excessively large and unruly crowds” as reported by several media outlets.

Reacting to the chaos on Monday morning, Mayor Dan Gelber said: “We haven’t asked for spring break in our city. We don’t want spring break in our city. It’s too rowdy, brings too much disorder and is simply too difficult to police. Continue reading

Get Over It

Today, March 9th is National Get Over It Day, according to the National Day Calendar of unusual holidays.

Jeff Goldblatt, an entrepreneur from Atlanta, George, created this day when he was struggling to get over a romantic breakup. He even wrote a poem and began a website to promote this day.

Be Greater Than You Can Imagine

Often while watching TV I will mute the commercials.

One reason is that the sound increases during commercials, which my wife, Norma Jean. finds irritating. She says I have the TV too loud anyway. Huh?

Also some commercials are repeated so many times that we grow weary of hearing them. Others we just find silly or trite. Anyway the mute button gives us a 3-4 minute respite.

Yesterday, however, a commercial appeared that I hadn’t seen before. It was by Bank OZK, headquartered in Little Rock, with several branches in the Tampa Bay area, plus on line banking. Continue reading

Hebrews 11:4

In one of his sermons W. A. Criswell told a story about the president of a great railway system who died.

“The funeral service was held at two o’clock on a weekday afternoon. At that exact moment, every train came to a dead stop. Every wheel ceased to turn. Every workman dropped his tools. Every clerk turned from his files. For three minutes, the entire vast railway system came to a complete stop.” Continue reading

When You Feel Forsaken

Have you ever felt like everyone was against you?

Your spouse was discontented. Distant.  And disengaged.   Your kids seemed sullen and angry.  Your boss was demanding.  Impossible to please.  A friend betrayed you.  Others turned on you.  No one listened.  Or understood.  Or seemed to care.  People who lauded and praised you a few days ago now turn on you with a spiteful venom.  Continue reading

ONE BLOOD

It was on this date in 1868 that W. E. B. Du Bois was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

As a teenager Du Bois became aware of the “vast veil” separating him from his white classmates. As a result, “he devoted most of his life to studying the position of Black Americas from a sociological point of view.”

Du Bois was a sociologist, historian, civil rights activist and author, who helped found the NAACP in 1909. While he had impressive academic credentials, including a doctorate from Harvard University, he was unable to get a job at a major university. Continue reading
