Remember the NYC cop who bought the homeless man a pair of $100 boots? Well, he’s back on the street. Barefoot. That’s right. A New York Times reporter found him wandering the streets of Manhattan on Sunday night. With no shoes! Continue reading

Are You Truly Free?
Have you heard about Lindsey Stone? She’s the Massachusetts woman who posted the above picture of herself on facebook. As you can see she is making a crude gesture and yelling in front of a sign in Arlington National Cemetery that says, “Silence and Respect.” Obviously, she is doing neither. The post went viral causing a national controversy. As a result, Lindsey was fired from her job. Continue reading

Post Thanksgiving Day Thoughts
ThePreachersWord is back after a short break! We hope you’ve had a good Thanksgiving holiday and enjoyed some special times with loved ones.
On Wednesday we published our ABC’S of Thanksgiving. If you missed it, I think you would enjoy it. https://thepreachersword.com/2012/11/21/the-abcs-of-thanksgiving
With the holiday behind us, I wanted to share a few thoughts that have been on my mind the past few days. Kind of a potpourri of post-thanksgiving thoughts and observations. Continue reading

“King David:” The Downfall of a Hero
He was called “King David” by the troops. He had position. Power. Prestige. He was hailed as a hero. Loved by his countrymen. Feared by His enemies. And jeered by his critics. His life had been a series of successes from his youth. And now the revelation of an illicit relationship has brought him to the lowest point in his life.
No, I’m not talking about King David in the Bible, but General David Petraeus. Continue reading
POST ELECTION THOUGHTS: It’s Not About Red States or Blue States
(We are continuing to reblog the top posts of 2012 during the holiday break. This one ranked #4. As someone who is growing weary of the constant political bickering, the challenge issued here is a good reminder. Share this post with your friends)
Tuesday night I was excited to watch the election returns. I tuned-in early to hear the optimistic predictions. I was feeling confident that real change was coming. Perhaps I’ve been in denial. Drinking the “kool aid” that has been in abundant supply. In my stricken state of mind I even filled out a prediction map calling for a big upset victory! Even when things were not looking so good, I was convinced the Karl Rove was right! All would end well. Continue reading

What Does the Bible Say About Capital Punishment?
The Kansas City Star in Saturday’s weekly column, Voices of Faith, led with the headline and question “Most religions say killing is wrong so is the death penalty also wrong?” Continue reading

“I’m Not Perfect”
Have you seen former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on his media tour promoting his new book? “Total Recall: My Unbelievable True Life Story” is mainly about his success as a world-champion bodybuilder, a Hollywood box-office heavyweight, and two-term Governor of California.
One chapter, called “The Secret,” is devoted to his affair with their housekeeper that produced an out-of-wedlock son, who was five years old when he ran for govenor. Continue reading
Will God Bless America?
“God bless you.” “And God bless America.” How many times did we hear some version of “God bless” during the past two weeks of the Republican and Democratic National conventions? Almost every speaker invoked God’s blessing once or twice at the end of every speech.
But I was struck by the irony of asking for God to bless America all the while advocating moral positions that are contrary to the will of God. Abortion. Homosexuality. Same-Sex marriage. So as I thought about all the request for God to bless America, I wondered…..will He? Continue reading
Is the Younger Generation Wiser?
On Sunday’s commentary page of the Kansas City Star, Mary Sanchez has a column entitled “In time, view on same-sex marriage will shift.” In the article she weighs in on the recent controversy caused by Chick-fil-A CEO, Dan Cathy, regarding traditional marriage. But the thrust of her observations center around the reaction, attitude and values of college age young people. She closes her article by saying “But it’s a younger, wiser generation that will lead.” My question is where will they lead us? Continue reading
