How To Deal With Grievous Sin

Kent and Barbara Hughes, in their book on ministry, tell of a gifted young preacher who had experienced a moral failure in his ministry.

He borrowed a pickup truck and wheeled in the church parking lot. Everyone watched as he backed across the church lawn to his study door. Refusing any assistance from the members and without any comments, he began emptying his office upon the truck bed. First, he emptied the content of his desk draws. Then His files. Or as expressed by the often quoted author anonymous, “We are limited not by our abilities but by our vision.”

A Passage To Ponder: Philippians 4

There’s an old story about a Georgia farmer, ragged and barefooted, standing on the steps of his tumbledown shack, when a stranger stopped to ask directions. After giving the information, the farmer offered the fellow a cold drink, so he decided to pass the time for a few minutes and ask about his crops.

“How is your cotton coming along?” he asked.

America is beginning to reopen from the shutdown caused by COVID-19. Little by little. State by state. City by city. There is obviously a great desire to get back to normal.

Word of the Week: Happiness

“Where is happiness?” asked minister Clarence Macartney. He debunked the answers most people give with several illustrations from the history of prominent people.

The 18th century British poet Lord Byron who lived a hedonistic life, learned that happiness is not found in pleasure. He wrote “The worm, the canker, and the grief are mine alone.”

Happiness is not found in money learned the 19th century American Financier, Jay Gould. Although known for his ruthless and unscrupulous business practices, he became wealthy. When dying, Gould lamented, “I suppose I am the most miserable man on earth Continue reading →

Sunday Seed Thoughts: When To Assemble Again?

Today, I am blessed for the second consecutive Sunday to be worshiping with and preaching for the brethren in Cosby, Tennessee.

The situation up here in the mountains is unique. There have been only 18 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Cocke county where the church is located. And no deaths.  In neighboring Sevier county only 65 cases with 2 deaths. Continue reading →

Baptism and the Blood of Jesus

Years ago in Guidepost magazine, Paul Harvey wrote about his baptism:

“The preacher had said there was nothing magic in the water. Yet as I descended into its depths and rose again, I knew something life-changing had happened, a cleansing inside out. No longer did there seem to be two uncertain, contradictory Paul Harveys; just one immensely happy one. I felt a fulfilling surge of the Holy Spirit and afterward I cried like a baby. The change this simple act has made in my life is so immense as to be indescribable.” As the old song says, ‘He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood.’”

Shepherding God’s Flock

Leadership guru John Maxwell often says, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” And what is leadership? Maxwell defined it this way.

“After more than four decades of observing leadership within my family and the many years of developing my own leadership potential, I have come to this conclusion: Leadership is influence. That’s it. Nothing more; nothing less. My favorite leadership proverb is “He who thinketh he leadeth and hath no one following him is only taking a walk.”

This is true in the world of business, sports, and politics. It’s also true in the Lord’s church. Continue reading →
