Weekly Recap: September 26-October 1

Good Morning from Beverly Hills, Florida

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Back To Basics

Today Norma Jean and I are in the Memphis area where I’m beginning a meeting for the East Shelby Church in Collierville, Tennessee.

The Shepherds have asked me to preach lessons based on Ephesians 4 that speak to the issue of religious unity. We’ve entitled the series: “Christianity 101: Bible Basics for the 21st Century.”

Sometimes it’s good to get back to the basics. To the fundamentals. To the authoritative principles on which our faith is founded.

The story is told that the legendary football coach Vince Lombardi came into the training camp of the Green Bay Packers in the summer of 1961 taking nothing for granted. Continue reading →

Three Life Lessons From “The Sultan of Swat”

Today’s the last day of September. Fall is in the air. And baseball playoffs begin next week, with the World Series just around the corner.

What team will rise to the top? What heroics will be talked about for years to come? Who will be Mr. October? And what stories will be retold from bygone years?

A Passage To Ponder: Psalm 130

“Waking up to a beautiful sunrise is so promising. The air is quiet. Birds are beginning to stir in their nests. The moon is fading away as the sun’s rays quietly take over the sky”, wrote an unknown devotional writer.

Glorifying God

On Sunday, the Las Vegas Raiders defeated the Miami Dolphins in overtime to begin the season 3-0, their best start since 2002.

Quarterback, Derek Carr, in a post-game interview, deflected credit for the team’s success saying, “All of the self-glory – that stuff is fleeting,”

The Fox interviewer told Carr that he’s playing with confidence and command like an MVP. Carr responded, “I’ve been through that stuff before…all I want to do is glorify {God}. Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Advice

Bombeck achieved popularity for her syndicated newspaper column that humorously described the American home, marriage, relationships and life in general from 1965 to 1996.

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Preaching That Connects

Gladys Dunn had recently moved into a retirement community and was looking for a church to attend. Fortunately, she found a congregation to attend within walking distance.

When she arrived on Sunday, she found the building attractive and inviting. The people were friendly. The singing was enthusiastic and edifying. The prayers were fervent. And the communion service was reflective and thought-provoking. Continue reading →

Weekly Recap: September 19-24

Good Morning from Citrus County, Florida

Well, Fall has arrived in Florida. Sorta.  We’re waking up to 66 degrees. With predicted temperatures “only” mid to upper 80’s.  Give us another month or so, and it will be pretty sweet.

Tomorrow AM I’m teaching the adult class and preaching for the West Citrus Church, where we’re members.  Wednesday night we will be at the Brooksville Church closing out their summer lecture series with the topic, “God is Love.”  Then getting ready for a meeting at the East Shelby Church in Collierville, Tennesse, beginning next Sunday.  So, it’s a busy week ahead.
