“Dad, what’s the secret of life?” anxiously asked the oldest on the day he turned 12.

The father made the boy promise not to tell his brother and proceeded to reveal the secret. Continue reading

Renewed Interest in the Bible

“The two most popular podcasts in the United States right now are not about sports, news, or even pop culture. They’re about the Bible,” according to an article by Christian Headlines contributor Michael Foust.

Foust reports that “The Bible in a Year,” hosted by Mike Schmitz is No. 1 in the U.S. on Apple’s podcast charts. And No. 2 is “The Bible Recap” by Tara-Leigh Cobble.

“The podcasts rank higher than podcasts by The New York Times, NBC, Joe Rogan, and NPR,” writes Foust. Continue reading

Psalm 145

In the comic strip BC, the caveman is having a crisis of faith. He cries out, “God, just show me YOU exist, and I’ll believe.”

Suddenly there’s an earthquake. A volcano erupts. Lightning strikes. Finally, a rainbow appears.

In the last frame the caveman is still pleading, “Please, God, just show me a sign!” Continue reading

Obstacles To Commitment

In the 1990s there was a popular TV show Seinfeld, which is still in reruns today. The self-proclaimed show about “nothing,” often revealed some life lessons in a rather humorous and sometimes silly fashion.

One of the characters, George Constanza, consistently encountered problems. Many were self-imposed issues in the area of commitment. Especially in his relationships.

In one episode, George fell in love with a woman in prison. This was perfect because she was the ultimate unavailable partner. The relationship was limited. The demands on George were few. And his commitment was almost non-existent. However, as soon as she was released from prison the relationship fell apart. Continue reading

The story is told that Livingstone once received a letter from the London Missionary Society inquiring about his work in Africa. They asked the explorer, “Have you found a good road to where you are? If so, we want to know how to send other men to join you? Continue reading

Faces in Eternity

On one of our trips to the Smoky Mountains after preaching for the Cosby Church, we enjoyed a wonderful visit with our good friends, Olie and Mary Williamson.

We when we were ready to leave, with her eyes welling up with tears, Mary gave us a gift and said, “I want you to listen to this as you travel.” It was a CD by the southern gospel Quartet, Greater Vision. The other day I listened again to its powerful and emotional message.  And immediately knew I wanted to share its lyrics with our readers. Continue reading
