A Biblical Response to “Pride Month”

Two years ago the late Matt Bassford posted this piece on his blog site His Excellent Word. It’s a thoughtful and well reasoned response to “Pride Month.” We recommend its message for your careful consideration. Continue reading

Confession is Fundamental

There’s an old adage attributed to a Scottish proverb that says, “Confession is good for the soul.”

While this exact expression is not found in the Bible, the concept of confession is one of the fundamentals of our faith. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: June 10-14

Greetings from Beverly  Hills, FL

We’ve enjoyed a wonderful week in Temple Terrace attending the VBS at the TT Church.  We took all four of our grandchildren, Roy, Miles, Katherine, and Fern.  It was fun to witness their excitement as they thrilled at the narratives about Daniel and the 3 Hebrew captives–Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego.   The theme, Building Faith in Babylon, was a faith building experience not only for the kids, but for adults who attended the auditorium class.  We appreciate the hard work by the TT brethren in making this event possible. The Danger of Waiting Until Later

“My advice is, never do tomorrow what you can today. Procrastination is the thief of time,” wrote Charles Dickens’ in his novel David Copperfield.

Also, as my favorite author anonymous once opined, “Procrastination is the grave in which opportunity is buried.” Continue reading

Four Facts About Temptation

“I’m the marshmallow man,” quipped Columbia University Professor Walter Mischel. Over the past 50 years his “Marshmallow Test” has become synonymous with the concepts of self-control, temptation, and delayed gratification.

The test is simple. A child is given a single marshmallow and this choice: Eat this one now. Or wait for 15 minutes and you can eat two. As you can imagine the results are a bit comical as kids twist and turn trying to control themselves from eating. Continue reading

Daniel 3–Unbending Commitment

Yesterday’s lesson at the Temple Terrace VBS was instructive, exciting, challenging, and inspiring. And not just for the kids

My good friend and preaching colleague, Ralph Walker, presented an engaging lesson that paralleled the children study of the three Hebrew boys, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who along with Daniel were in Babylonian captivity.

While there is no way we can capture the power of Ralph’s lesson in this short blog post, take a minute to read the text and consider these thoughts. Continue reading

How To Be Ten Times Better

This week we’re in Temple Terrace, Florida, attending the VBS at the Temple Terrace Church with our four grandchildren, Roy, Miles, Katherine, and Fern.

The book highlights the sovereignty and providence of Jehovah as well as the courage, faithfulness and fortitude of Daniel and the other Hebrews– Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego

Our study reminds me of a story once told by Charles Spurgeon, the 19th-century British evangelist, who was conducting a boys Bible class on the book of Daniel. Continue reading

Repentance is Fundamental

In May of 1948 Al Johnson was one of three men who robbed a bank of $1000 in Hoyt, Kansas. He was only 19 years old at the time.

A few weeks later three men were killed in car accident in a nearby town and the police decided they were the men in the robbery. Case closed. But the authorities were mistaken.

In the ensuing years Al Johnson became a devout follower of Christ. But the guilt of the bank robbery ate at his conscience. Continue reading

Counting the Cost

My preaching colleague and fellow Hoosier, Max Dawson, posted a piece on facebook a few months ago from his column “Pontiacs, Points, and Proverbs.”

Max is a “car guy” and loves to share various stories about cars and use them as a springboard to make a spiritual application. This one teaches a lesson that parallels one of Jesus’ parables. Continue reading
