A Passage To Ponder: Romans 15:7

This week I’m preaching in a meeting at Wellandport, Ontario, Canada. Last night a lady walked out of the building, shook my hand and wistfully commented, “I wish more people could have been here to have heard that sermon.”

The building was almost full. But I believe she was commenting more on the importance of the message preached than the messenger who delivered it. Or the number who attended. Continue reading

The Day of the Lord

In July, Norma Jean and I are going to Israel with Barry Britnell and the Florida College Hutchinson Bell group.

In the past several months we have been reading, planning, and preparing, for the day we leave. To help us, Barry has been sending emails with suggestions to help us get ready. And in each email, he’s counting down the days. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Credibility

Several years ago in a blog post author, Rick Warren, in David Letterman style identified Ten Great American Lies:

#10 Your table will be ready in a minute.

#9 One size fits all.

#8 This will hurt me more than it hurts you.

#7 I’m sorry I’m late. I got stuck in traffic. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! When Failure is Not Fatal

With so many new readers in recent years, we’re occasionally reblogging past posts. This one powerfully speaks to me and my life. I hope it does to you.

John Maxwell has a neat book entitled “Failing Forward.”  The Subtitle is “Turning Mistakes Into Stepping Stones for Success.”  The thesis is that we all fail.  But some fail backward.  And others fail forward.  Successful people respond positively to their failures.  They learn.  Grow.  And achieve.

4 Reasons To Attend Worship

In recent days there has been some discussion on facebook about a quote from the Christian hip hop artist Toby McKeehan, better known by his stage name TobyMac.

Some have suggested his quote as posted above implies that the only reason we attend church is to worship God. Others have opined that we are also there for fellowship. And so the discourse ensued, debating and discussing the purpose of our worship assembly.

The Bible reveals at least 4 valid reasons for attending church services. Continue reading

“What do you say?” the mother said to her son.

With a big smile on his face and great confidence, he exuded, “Charge it!” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Boldness

Frederick the Great, the 18th century King of Prussia, is said to have once invited some notable people to his royal table including his top-ranking generals. One of them, Hans von Zieten, declined the invitation because he wanted to partake of communion at his church.

At a later banquet when von Zieten was present, Frederick mocked the general for his religious beliefs, as the other guests joined in joking about the Lord’s supper. Continue reading

How To Resist Temptation

Chuck Swindoll, in Three Steps Forward, Two Steps Back, tells a story about a father concerned about the danger of a nearby canal, ordered his son, “Don’t swim in the canal.”

“OK, Dad,” he answered.

However, later that day he saw his son coming home carrying a wet swimsuit.

“Where have you been?” demanded the father.

“Swimming in the canal,” answered the boy. Continue reading

Soldiers of Christ, Arise!

Today, June 6th, is the 75th anniversary of Operation Overlord, code named D-Day, the Allied invasion of northern France.

The assault began at daybreak when Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower gave the go-ahead for the largest amphibious military operation in history.

By the end of the day, 155,000 American, British and Canadian troops had successful stormed Normandy’s beaches and were able to push inland. While many were wounded and died, the campaign was ultimately successful. And within three months, northern France would be freed and the Allied forces would enter Germany. Continue reading
