It was 800 miles from the North African city of Cyrene in Lybia to Jerusalem.The journey was long and arduous. But the time, effort and expense would be worth it. No doubt this dark-skinned man, a Hellenistic Jew, named Simon, was eagerly anticipating the feast days. The Passover. The fellowship. The communion with other worshipers. An opportunity to honor the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

We don’t know if it was his first trip. Or his last. Or maybe he settled there. But we can know this. He never forgot it. And neither did his sons, Rufus and Alexander.

As he entered the city on that fateful Friday, here’s what Simon saw. A crowd going the opposite direction. There was commotion. A mob-like frenzy. “What’s going on?” he may have inquired of someone in the crowd. “We’re going to Calvary!” is the reply. “Three criminals are going to be executed!”

It would be normal for Simon to have been curious. Was he going to Calvary or not? The scripture doesn’t say. But as he possibly pondered this scene. The criminals come by. They are bearing their own crosses of execution. He could see their faces.

I can imagine Simon seeing the first two hardened men. Defiant. Determined. Ready to die for their crimes. Exchanging jibes with the mob. But the third man Simon saw was different.

His face is not hard. His eyes are filled with sorrow. Pity. Pain. He’s the object of scorn from the crowd. Cries of derision fill the air. Ugly epithets and contemptuous ridicule are shamelessly hurled at this hurting man.

Then it happens. The beating has taken its toll. The loss of blood is too much. He staggers. His knees buckle. He’s crushed to the ground by the weight of the cross. Right in front of Simon.

I can imagine, as Simon looked down on Jesus he felt sympathy. Sorrow. Concern. But there’s nothing he can do. Then he’s awakened from his musing to feel the tap of a Roman solider’s spear on his shoulder and voice bellowing, “You! Make yourself useful! Pick up that cross! And get going! Now!”

The Bible writer Mark simply records, ” And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.” Simon saw Jesus. He walked with Christ to Calvary.

We’re not told anything more about Simon. But I believe this providential encounter changed his life. His boys became Believers, since they are mentioned by Mark and known to his readers. Paul greets a Christian named Rufus in Romans 16:13. There is an Alexander mentioned in Acts 19:33.

What appeared to be a harrowing experience, resulted in a wonderful opportunity for Simon. Warren Wiersbe writes, “Before Simon met Jesus, he had religion and devotion, but after he met Jesus, he had reality and salvation. He did both a physical and spiritual ‘about face’ that morning and it transformed his life.”

I wonder if Simon saw the resurrected Jesus on Sunday? Or was he numbered in the 500 that witnessed Jesus alive again? Was he present on Pentecost? Did he die with Christ that day in baptism? We don’t know.

But this we do know. God can use us in unexpected ways. In unusual times. When we least expect it. He can take a cross we are compelled to carry and change it into an opportunity. He can take us in a different direction, change our plans and make the outcome better than we could ever imagine!

Simon saw Jesus. Up close. And personal. He saw God’s plan for his family’s redemption being executed right before his eyes. He saw the cross. And he carried the cross. He saw the change in his life. And in the lives of his two sons.

What do you see?

Maybe that cross you once felt compelled to carry, can become a charge that you gladly keep. When you meet the crucified Christ on Calvary’s road, and come to the foot of the cross, you can receive the blessings of the risen Redeemer.

The “Friday” of your life may take an unforeseen, unplanned detour, but it can result in the glory of resurrection Sunday!

  3. MARK 15:21 IS A KEY VERSE TO SEEING THE CROSS OF JESUS AS THE RED-HAIRED, THE RUFUS SISTER OF ALEXANDER. Mark records Alexander as Bar abbas…the son of Simon as if Simon was his biological Father rather than Christ the Everlasting Father who carries the Bride to Calvary to the place of the skull (the bald headed one) leaving her brother Alexander Jesus Barabbas behind. Rufus the chosen one in the Lord does not cling to Jesus Barabbas aka Jesus the Rabboni the Prince of Peace (John 20:15). Rather she Rufus cleaves, clings, to Christ the Everlasting Father, the Simon who “they” the Romans compel to carry her–the Cross of Jesus.

    Rufus (Latin for red-haired one) is the Cross, the Fruitful Vine…the Vineyard of Red Wine praised in Psalm 128:3 and foretold in Isaiah 27:2 and the ONE …Paul instructs the Romans to Greet with a kiss (Romans 16:13).

    Romans 16:13 is another key verse. Here Paul claims Rufus is the chosen one of the Lord…the Bride!!! Now as the Bride of Christ, Rufus becomes the Mother of Christ in the same way that Christ becomes the Everlasting Father. So when Paul the Mother of the Gospel who was crucified with Christ (Galatians 2:20), instructs the infant Church in Rome to greet Rufus with a kiss…Paul is actually instructing the Romans to greet herself.

    So thank you Ken for telling the story of Simon in a way that assembles the facts as if they were nails that crucify Simon, Alexander and Rufus. So assembled together in this post Ken, both Simon aka Cephas and Alexander aka Apollo are crucified with Paul aka Rufus the Mother, the Theotokos.

    I too hope this post speaks to people so that they are brought closer to the Cross and to the black, bald man aka Simon the Cyrene, aka Cephas aka Peter–and to each other (1 Corinthians 1:11-13).
