You Need To Get A Bible In Your Hands

Bible.HoldingLynn Anderson tells about his grandson, Conner, who was in the four-year old Bible class at church.  The teacher said, “Today we are going to talk about Jesus.”  Where upon Conner stood up and, thrust his hand onto his hips, and authoritatively confronted the teacher, “Well, if you’re gonna talk about Jesus you need to get a Bible in your hands.”

Conner may have deserved a “D” in conduct, but give him an “A” for accuracy!””

Jesus said, “You search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me” (Jn 5:39).  If we want to know Jesus we must go to the Bible. Too often, we listen to what others say about Jesus, read about what men write about Jesus, but never go to the source to get it first hand.

In fact, Jesus did that very thing.  More than once.  Following the resurrection when he joined the two men on the Emmaus road who were distraught at the events surround Jesus’ crucifixion.  The Bible  says, “So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.”

Jesus asked, “Why are you so sad?”  They were astounded!  The opined that he was a stranger in Jerusalem, the only one who didn’t know what had occurred in the past few days.  Jesus inquired, “What things?”  And so they begin to tell him about Jesus!  Their hope in Him.  The rejected of the religious leaders.  His death.  And now the empty tomb.

At that point  Dr. Luke records, “And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself” (Lk.24:47)

Yes, get a Bible in your hands!  One of my favorite authors, Anonymous, years ago penned a tribute piece to the Bible.

The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom  of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you.

It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword,  and the Christian’s charter. Here Paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed. Christ is its grand subject, our good the design, and the glory of God its end.

It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly,  frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of  pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgment, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.

During this time of year, we hear a lot about Jesus.  But exalting the person of Jesus without receiving, believing and obeying the Word of Jesus becomes a fruitless exercise that will result in a shallow spiritually.  Unfulfilled discipleship.  And finally  disappointment in the day of Judgment.

You need to get a Bible in your hands!

“out of the mouths of babes”…leave it to a 4 year old to be so intuitive! 🙂 but, really, this one is a good reminder for ALL of us…”beware of dusty Bible’s”! my dad used to tell me, on the way out the door to church…”you wouldn’t go to school w/out your books, so don’t leave the house w/out your BIBLE”! 🙂 have a great day, & wonderful holiday season, Bro. Ken! 🙂 Julie

I’m sure you’ve heard of an acronym for Bible:
    Basic
    Instructions
    Before leaving
    Leaving
    Earth

Kids are greatly perceptive! A 6 year old said yesterday in my class (in regard to Jesus saying the Helper would come after He left), “We need the Bible because everything in it is TRUE!” Good post to boost our day. Thanks, Ken

Today I will visit a friend recently moved into a nursing facility in Palm Harbor, Florida. His name is Gerry Ashley. Unfortunately, I met Gerry in the immediate aftermath of my late wife’s passing, in a rebellious and selfish state of mind.

Gerry has recently been diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer and has had all the chemo therapy and radiation protocols. Gerry and I have never had a lengthy conversation about Jesus. Gerry is an intellectual, and I placed a higher value on his friendship through the better part of our association.

Today, I will give him a Bible. It will contain a page with the above “anonymous” quote and my personal note, “There is no greater gift I can give you. It is to my shame that we never talked at length of such important things during the life of our friendship.”

  4. Enjoyed the article and everyone should get a bible. I hate to be picky but I think that you left out the word “hear” in the following sentence: “During this time of year, we a lot about Jesus”
