Hear Ye!

I am writing this post at 30,000′ on a Southwest Jet between Tampa and Kansas City.  Upon take off I was glancing through the Spirit Magazine and saw an interesting article on their “Life Apps Conversationator” page.  The opening line was “Listening requires more than opening your ears.”  The article was highlighting a book by Bernard Ferrari entitled “Power Listening: Mastering the Most Critical business Skill of All.”  Continue reading

Draw Near to God

“Lord be with us…” is an expression we often hear in public prayers.  Sometimes it’s prayed as it relates to our family.  Or in a closing prayer as we leave the assembly.  Or in our daily Christian walk.  I’ve also heard it applied to our services.  “Lord be with us as we worship today.” Continue reading

What Cancer Cannot Do

I remember the first time I heard of it. I was ten years old.  My Granny Key was real sick. And my Mom was very  sad.  They said it was cancer.  I didn’t really know what that meant.  I just knew the deep concern it caused my parents. Continue reading

Called Into His Wonderful Light

There is a fable about a cave which lived under ground, as caves have a habit of doing.  It had spent its entire life in darkness.  One day it heard a voice calling to it.  “Come up into the light, and see the sunshine.”

The cave retorted, “I don’t know what you mean.  There isn’t anything but darkness.”  Continue reading

Night Vision

Lynn Anderson tell the story about  a shipload of travelers who landed on the northeast coast of America about 350 years ago. The first year they established a town site. The next year they elected a town government. The third year the town government planned to build a road five miles westward into the wilderness. In the fourth year the people tried to impeach their town government because they thought it was a waste of public funds to build a road five miles westward into a wilderness. Who needed to go there anyway?

Some Things I Can Know

A  train traveling through the night in a very violent rainstorm. The lightning flashes were almost blinding, the rain hitting the windows was deafening and the strong wind gusts rocked the train from side to side. When the lightning flashed and lighted up the darkness, the passengers could see the rising water along the tracks. This created terror in the minds of the passengers. Several passengers noted that through all the noise, lightening and wind, one of the passengers, a little girl, Continue reading

Jesus: You Light Up My Life

In 1977 song writer Joe Brooks wrote a song entitled “You Light Up My Life.”  It was recorded by Debby Boone and became an instant success.  It was the best-selling single of the 70’s.  In fact, it continues to rank #7 on Billboards list of 100 top songs.  Brooks wrote it as a love song, but Debby interpreted it as a song about her relationship with Jesus. Some of the lyrics go like this: Continue reading

Who’s Your God?

James Michener, in his book, The Source, tells the story of a man named Urbaal, a farmer who lived about 2200 B.C. He worshiped two gods. The god of death and the goddess of fertility.

One day, the temple priests tell Urbaal to bring his young son to the temple for sacrifice, if he wants good crops. Continue reading

As We Eat the Lord’s Supper

Today, am I worshiping with the brethren in Kettering, Ohio.  It brings back fond  memories.  I used to preach here.  We were a young married couple and Kenny was just a baby when we came.  The brethren were good to us.  And they gave us an opportunity to learn. To grow.  To minister.  And so I come back to preach in a meeting. But on this day, I will join with them in eating the Lord’s Supper.  Continue reading

The Storms of Life

I have been watching Fox News on and off all day reporting on the storms tearing across states from the Gulf Coast to Great Lakes. Over 74 storms have been reported.  Powerful tornadoes have ripped roofs off of houses.  Downed trees. Damaged businesses.  Destroyed schools.  The town of “Maryville(Indiana) is completely gone,” said Clark County Sheriff Department Maj. Chuck Adams.  Wiped away by the fierce winds. Henryville, Indiana, suffered extensive damage.  Continue reading
