“I wish I had more time…” We’ve all heard that said. Right? Maybe we’ve even said it ourselves! About a project. A deadline. Bible reading. Family activities. Or the work day. Well, today, your wish comes true! You have an extra day! Because it’s leap year, there are 29 days in February.
I suppose we could treat this like any other day. Same morning routine. Same trip to work. Same people we see. Same place for lunch. Nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing different. Just another day.
Let me challenge you to take this extra day and make it a special day. After all, it only comes once every four years!
Begin by saying, “this is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.” Just for today no grumbling. No griping. No fussing. No fighting. Just rejoicing!
Now that you’ve begun in such a good mood, maybe you want to slow down a bit and have a bite of breakfast with your spouse or your kids. Or call a friend to meet you and enjoy some good fellowship.
Mix it up a little today. Drive a different way to work. Eat some place different for lunch. Stop at a different store. Who knows what you might see? Or who you might meet? Or what opportunities might arise?
Today renew your 2012 resolutions that may have been broken. Set aside. Or just forgotten. It’s never too late to begin again.
How about doing something special today for a family member? Your husband. Wife. Children. Parents. A favorite aunt or uncle. It might be a meal. A flower. A gift. A little extra effort to help. Or simply an out of state phone call to say, “Just thinking about you and wanted to say I love you.”
Is there something your been procrastinating that you could do today? Or at least get started?
Is there a person you can call, visit or write that would be encouraged by your sincere concern?
Maybe it’s a financial donation you’ve intended to make, but haven’t “gotten around to it.” Write a check today to that club. College. Charity. Organization. Or individual that could use your support.
And as you think of all these things, listen to Laura Palmer’s advice, “Don’t waste today regretting yesterday instead of making a memory for tomorrow.” I’m reminded of a story by Ann Wells printed in the LA Times several years ago. My brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister’s bureau and lifted out a tissue-wrapped package. “This,” he said, “is not a slip. This is lingerie.” He discarded the tissue and handed me the slip. It was exquisite; silk, handmade and trimmed with a cobweb of lace. The price tag with an astronomical figure on it was still attached. “Jan bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion.
Well, I guess this is the occasion.” He took the slip from me and put it on the bed with the other clothes we were taking to the mortician. His hands lingered on the soft material for a moment, then he slammed the drawer shut and turned to me. “Don’t ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you’re alive is a special occasion.”
May we apply the words of the Bible, “Teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart” (Psalm 90:12 NRSV). And so, let us “encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today…” (Heb 3:13)
Today is your day. Live it. Love it. Enjoy it. Make it a special day. After all, it’s the only day you have.

Well, I’m taking a leap here to post for the first time. Didn’t want to jump in until I had something noteworthy to say, and wanted to avoid hopping all over the page trying to vault the norm and spring into thoughts that were on a higher plane. So let me bounce this off you, Ken, and feel free to skip off with this snippet of wisdom. Be careful where you gambol – there are pot holes you may not be able to hurtle.
Happy Leap Day!
