I love to preach. I have for over 40 years. It’s not only what I do. But it’s who I am. Preaching is as natural to me as breathing. It is more than a work. It is a calling. Preaching is satisfying. Gratifying. Fulfilling. But not because of some earthly or material goal. Preaching can make a difference in the lives of people. Both in time and in eternity.
Preaching, you see, is not a man ordained activity. It is not something to be scorned. Or disdained. Or despised. Sometimes preaching is spoken of today with contempt. Preaching is God ordained. Noah was the first recorded preacher. He is called a preacher of righteousness (2 Pet. 2:5). Isaiah was a preacher. So was Jeremiah. In the New testament we read of John the Immerser preaching in the wilderness (Matt 3:1). The apostles were preachers. Everyone of them! Peter. Paul. John. And the prince of preachers was Jesus Christ Himself (Matt 4:23).
God chose preaching as means to bring people out of a sinful world, into a relationship with Jesus Christ, and to save them from their sins (Rom. 1:16; 1 Cor 1:18). Preaching is important. Vital. God directed.
While the Word of God remains unchanged, the means and methods of preaching have changed. When I began preaching 40 years ago, I wrote words on a blackboard, typed my sermons on a manual typewriter, and printed the bulletin on a mimeograph machine! Today I use PowerPoint, type sermons on a Dell Inspiron computer and use color printers for lesson materials. People use their smart phones or ipads to read the Bible text.
The gospel preaching can be accessed on line, and on posted on web sites. Blogs are used as teaching tools. I always enjoyed teaching through the printed page. So, I have thought for some time of starting a Blog. This past month while posting my Journey through Psalms and Proverbs on Facebook, I realized quite a few were reading my thoughts. So, I thought it’s in 2012 to begin the blog.
Several years ago when we were living in Palmetto, Florida, the Mayor, Toby Holland, dubbed me withthe nickname “preacherman.” My email is preacherman@weliever.net
So, it seemed natural to call my blog ThePreachersWord. I hope like the ancient Preacher of Ecclesiastes I can “find delightful words and to write words of truthcorrectly” (Eccl 12:10).
Of course, my goal for ThePreachersWord is to accurately reflect God’s Word. To encourage. To edify. To enlighten. Hopefully, we can accomplish this on a regular, if not daily basis. Thanks for stopping by. I hope you come back and visit on a regular basis.
Tomorrow look for my thoughts on “Beginning Again” to kickoff the new year.
