Involvement in Worship

Warren Hamby was right when he wrote, “Worship isolated from involvement is a bland and meaningless exercise.”

Involvement has to do with activity.  Commitment.  It means “to engage or employ.”  “To engage the interest or emotions.”  “To absorb fully.”

If we are passive in worship, disengaged and sit waiting for something to happen to us, we will be disappointed in the service.  We may leave saying, “I didn’t get anything out of it. Continue reading

Draw Near to God

“Lord be with us…” is an expression we often hear in public prayers.  Sometimes it’s prayed as it relates to our family.  Or in a closing prayer as we leave the assembly.  Or in our daily Christian walk.  I’ve also heard it applied to our services.  “Lord be with us as we worship today.” Continue reading

As We Eat the Lord’s Supper

Today, am I worshiping with the brethren in Kettering, Ohio.  It brings back fond  memories.  I used to preach here.  We were a young married couple and Kenny was just a baby when we came.  The brethren were good to us.  And they gave us an opportunity to learn. To grow.  To minister.  And so I come back to preach in a meeting. But on this day, I will join with them in eating the Lord’s Supper.  Continue reading

(2) A Conviction of our Sinfulness.  (3) A Joyful Reminder of God’s Grace.  (4) The Inspiration to Serve. While there may be other expectations, I can’t disagree with these four. Continue reading

The Bread of Life

I recently read about an internet company that  advertised a “hugable, washable, and talking” Jesus doll that recites “actual Scripture verses to introduce children of all ages to the wisdom of the Bible.” for $15.95.  Its sayings include, “I have an exciting plan for your life,” and “Your life matters so much to Me.” No matter that these exact sayings aren’t in the Bible, but who wouldn’t want to follow a Jesus like this? Worship Changes Worshipers

“Worship changes the worshiper into the image of the One worshiped.”

This quote by Jack Hayford reminds me of Romans 8:29 where Paul wrote that Christians are to be “conformed to the image of His Son.”  In other words we are to become like the One we worship.  We are, as Peter put it, to become “partakers of the divine nature.” Continue reading

Worship God

A husband and wife were on the way home from worship one Sunday morning.  As they rode along, the wife asked her husband, “Did you see that woman in the front row showing off her Liz Claiborne suit?”

            He said, “No.” Continue reading
